Narcotics detectives have taken a wanted male into custody and seized an illegal firearm and narcotics in the process.

On the evening of July 17th, narcotics detectives who were monitoring suspected drug activity conducted a traffic stop near the County Street/Cedar Grove intersection. The vehicle's driver was identified as ERMIRIO ROSA, 23, of Brockton.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered the ROSA was in possession of a 9mm R***r handgun loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition, which he was keeping in a f***y pack. ROSA was also found to be in possession of 25 grams of โ€œcrackโ€ co***ne, 65 grams of fentanyl, 50 tablets of Adderall, and $1050 in cash. This money was later seized due to the nature of his charges.

In addition, ROSA was found to have three active warrants for his arrest: One for drug and firearm charges out of Brockton District Court, one for he**in trafficking out of Bristol County Superior Court, and one for traffic offenses out of Fall River District Court. He already has a previous conviction for possessing class A substance with intent to distribute out of Taunton District Court, which could enhance penalties for additional cases.

Det. Emily Pacheco was the arresting officer.

Major Crime Detectives have concluded an investigation into repeated thefts from commercial trucks here in the City.

DANIEL PEDRO, 47, of 1669 Acushnet Ave., has been arrested concerning a series of vehicle breaks during which tens of thousands of dollarsโ€™ worth of tools and air compressors were stolen. All of these incidents occurred late at night/early morning hours, and entry was gained by breaking windows.

PEDRO was taken into custody on July 10th after detectives stopped him. At the time of his arrest, numerous tools, including a Husky Air compressor, Milwaukee toolbox, and Rigid Shop Vac were located in the rear of his truck.

As a result of this investigation into his activities, PEDRO is now charged with:

โ€ข Twelve counts of breaking and entering into a vehicle/ or boat
โ€ข Eight counts of Larceny over $1,200
โ€ข Larceny of a motor vehicle
โ€ข Receiving stolen property greater than $1,200
โ€ข Operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended or revoked license

Detective Matthew Sylvia was the lead investigator, and more charges may follow.

PEDRO has an extensive criminal history with 120 adult arraignments on his record. Although 47 of those cases were dismissed, he has numerous convictions for a variety of offenses, including 13 charges of breaking and entering.

PEDRO was held on $30,000 bail and is currently in the custody of the Bristol County Sheriffโ€™s Department.

โ€œWith such an extensive history of victimizing hard-working citizens, it appears as though incarceration is the only option for this career criminal. My thanks to the court for setting a $30k bail, and to DA Tom Quinnโ€™s Office for their continued diligence as they proceed forward with this case,โ€ said Chief Paul Oliveira. โ€œIโ€™d also like to acknowledge the hard work of Det. Matthew Sylvia and our Detective Division."

Have you had tools or similar equipment stolen from your vehicle recently? If so, detectives would like to hear from you -- perhaps we have recovered them. Contact our Detective Division at (508) 991-6300 and speak with Det. Matthew Sylvia at Extension #79531.

After arresting a man with an illegal firearm, detectives now have enough to charge him with this monthโ€™s Roosevelt Street shooting.

On July 10th, narcotics detectives were conducting surveillance in the area of Nye Street and Acushnet Avenue when they observed a group of males congregating and drinking alcohol in public. When detectives approached them, it was learned that one male had discarded a cross-body bag he had been wearing.

Within this bag was a magazine containing ten rounds of 9mm ammunition. A short distance away, detectives located a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun, which was later found to have been stolen out of Taunton. The suspect, JOSE MENDEZ-GARCIA, 33, of 129 Bluefield St., was placed into custody. He was charged with possession of an open container of alcohol, carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm without a license, and receiving stolen property. The arresting officer was Det. George Coto.

In the days that followed, Detective Jordan Dasilva concluded his investigation into a shooting that took place on July 5th outside of 12 Roosevelt St. During this incident, an adult male victim was transported to St. Lukeโ€™s hospital after being injured by gunfire. Det. Dasilva has identified MENDEZ-GARCIA as the suspect and has brought charges against him for that incident.

In addition to the charges stemming from the firearm seizure in the north end, MENDEZ-GARCIA is now also charged with assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and additional serious charges.

MENDEZ has three prior guilty convictions for violent/drug offenses and was additionally charged with a firearm violation with three prior violent/drug crimes.

"This is strong work from the Detective Division on two occasions with the same suspect. First, they took the suspect into custody, and an illegal firearm was taken off the street. Next, they built a case that implicated the suspect in a shooting incident during which a victim was seriously injured. It's clear to me that a dangerous individual is in custody right now due to their diligence, and the city is a safer place today because of it. I'm very proud of all the men and women in this department,โ€ said Chief Paul Oliveira.

Great job Ofc. Mark Conley!

Today in New Bedford, a kind-hearted police officer named Mark, from the background division, embarked on a heartwarming mission to make sure, everyone stayed safe in the heat wave.

Oficer Mark was sitting in his office, realized how hot it was, so he grabbed cases of refreshing waters and with a smile on his face, he began distributing the bottles of water to anyone in that wanted one in Downtown New Bedford.

Officer Mark made sure to greet each person with a friendly welcome, ensuring that no one went without hydration in the midst of the Heat Wave. His dedication to the community was unwavering, and his actions spoke volumes about his genuine care and concern for the community.

It was clear to all who encountered him that Officer Mark was not just doing his job, but rather following his passion for helping others.

Thank you sir for all that you do.

***REPEAT OFFENDER ARRESTED ON WEAPONS CHARGES***

NEW BEDFORD โ€“ Police have arrested a man on weapons charges following a south-end disturbance.

On Sunday, July 7th, patrol officers responded to the area of David St. and Salisbury St. regarding a man who had just brandished a firearm. Upon arrival, Officer James Sullivan located the male, who he saw reaching into a cross-body bag he had been wearing. As Officer Sullivan attempted to engage him, he quickly tossed this bag to the ground.

Ofc. Sullivan then attempted to secure the man when he suddenly pushed away and tried to flee from the scene. Although resisting, he was eventually taken into custody and placed into restraints with the help of a good Samaritan. The suspect was then identified as Mr. MARCELL GONCALVES, 27, of 25 Dudley St.

As officers arrived on the scene to assist, GONCALVES was found to have a pair of brass knuckles and a knife in his possession. The bag that GONCALVES had tossed was found to contain a P80 Polymer โ€œGhost gunโ€ with no serial number. The gun was loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

GONCALVES was taken into custody and charged with numerous serious offenses, including carrying a large-capacity loaded firearm without a license, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm without a serial number. New Bedford, MA โ€“ New Bedford Police Animal Control Officers rescued 12 Cane Corsos and 9 French Bulldogs from a residence earlier this week while investigating animal cruelty.

On Monday, July 8th, Animal Control, Patrol Officers, and detectives initiated an investigation that resulted in numerous animal cruelty and drug charges. At 184 Myrtle St., investigators were struck by the pungent odor of urine and f***s and heard multiple dogs barking. In the attic, 12 Cane Corso dogs were discovered in cages. The temperature in the attic was indicated to be over 100 degrees. An additional 9 French Bull-mixed dogs were then found in the 3rd-floor apartment. Some bulldogs were loose in the apartment, and some were caged. None of the dogs had adequate access to food or water. Some had overgrown nails, which prevented them from walking normally. Conditions in the cages were described as unsanitary.

Upon the initial arrival of Animal Control officers, the tenant, Mr. DERRICK AMBROSE, 35, fled from the house. As the investigation continued, narcotics were also discovered in the apartment. AMBROSE was found to possess over 9 grams of fentanyl, over 25 grams of crack co***ne, Adderall, Oxycodone, mushrooms, and ma*****na. AMBROSE also had vacuum sealers, packaging materials, and digital scales, all used in the processing and packaging of illegal narcotics for street-level sales.

Altogether, 21 dogs were rescued from the residence. A warrant has been requested for DERRICK AMBROSE for 39 counts of animal cruelty and numerous narcotics-related charges, including trafficking over 18 grams of co***ne and possession with intent to distribute classes A, B, C, D, and E.

AMBROSE has an extensive criminal history with 67 adult arraignments and convictions for a variety of offenses, possession and discharge of a firearm, and possession of a dangerous weapon. He has two previous convictions for dealing co***ne, one for dealing fentanyl, and one for dealing ma*****na. At the time of this arrest, he had three open cases in Falmouth District Court and nine open cases in New Bedford District Court.

***SHOOTING SUSPECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. FIREARM SEIZED***

NEW BEDFORD โ€“ Police have made an arrest in last monthโ€™s Brickenwood shooting incident.

On June 25th, patrol units responded to a Yale St. residence regarding a male with a gun. Further investigation revealed that a suspect identified as Mr. ALFREDO LOYA, 22, discharged a firearm at the residence before fleeing the scene. LOYA already has several active warrants for his arrest and was now wanted on these new charges stemming from this incident.

On July 4th, acting on information that Det. Jonathan Miranda had gathered, detectives established surveillance on a location believed to be LOYAโ€™s current whereabouts. LOYA was located, and when detectives attempted to stop him, he fled on foot. He led detectives on a brief foot pursuit through a wooded area along 195 West and was observed discarding a firearm in the process.

LOYA was successfully apprehended and taken into custody. The firearm he had discarded was found to be a G***k 30; .45 caliber pistol loaded with 8 rounds of ammunition. LOYA now faces the charges associated with his warrants, the shooting incident last month, and illegal possession of the firearm. At his arraignment today, he was held in custody pending a dangerousness hearing tenatively scheduled for July 10th.

As we prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, the New Bedford Police Department (NBPD) would like to extend our warmest wishes for a fun and joyous holiday. Our primary goal is to ensure everyone can enjoy the festivities in a safe and secure environment.

To that end, we want to remind everyone that privately owned fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts. Possession or use of fireworks will result in immediate seizure, and individuals may face criminal charges.

We will be in full force tomorrow night, patrolling and keeping our community safe.

Please be aware that setting up fireworks displays in public areas such as parks, beaches, and streets is strictly prohibited. The NBPD will confiscate any fireworks found in these locations, and those responsible may be subject to enforcement actions.

We also want to inform you that the city's official fireworks display will NOT be visible from East and West Beach. The best viewing area will be around the State Pier. Additionally, parking around the beaches will be strictly enforced.

Our ultimate wish is for everyone to have a wonderful holiday. With your cooperation, we can all enjoy a fantastic and safe Fourth of July.

Thank you for your attention, and we hope you have a great Independence Day!

Earlier today, we were fortunate enough to participate in two events in the City -- a cookout for kids taking part in a summer basketball camp at New Bedford High School, and an ice cream and pizza party at the YWCA Southeastern Massachusetts.

As the aroma of hotdogs and hamburgers filled the air, courtesy of the NBPD, the kids had a blast exploring our wrapped cruisers and motorcycles. The fun continued with a bouncy house/slide that our Training Division and Outreach Coordinator, Sgt. Jorge, thoroughly enjoyed! And who could forget the dunk tank??

Shortly after, the excitement moved downtown to the YWCA, where our officers shared delightful moments over pizza and ice cream with the children. It was a heartwarming sight to see everyone bonding and enjoying themselves.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this unforgettable day of community, camaraderie, and pure joy! A special thank you goes out to the New Bedford Health Department for funding the events. Here's to many more moments like these in NB! ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ•๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿš“
