Our Executive Director, Harman Singh, joined Religions for Peace for a virtual discussion about Transnational Repression in North America. Harman was joined by fellow speakers Stephen Schneck, Commissioner of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), and Ria Chakrabaty, Sr. Policy Director of Hindus for Human Rights *tag*.

In this conversation Harman spoke about Indian Transnational Repression and the recent attempts to assassinate Sikh Canadians and Sikh Americans in the countries of their citizenship.

Watch the clip below to listen to Harman dismantle the false notion that Sikh extremism is a problem in the United States.

We solemnly remember Paramjit Kaur Saini, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Suveg Singh Khattra, and Satwant Singh Kaleka, who were killed on that dark day; we also honor the memory of Baba Punjab Singh, who in 2020 became the seventh person to pass away as a result of injuries sustained during the shooting.

We continue to be inspired by those who persevere through the life-altering injuries—including Bhai Santokh Singh and Lt. Brian Murphy—and trauma that they sustained.

And as ever, we remain grateful to the Oak Creek sangat, which set a remarkable standard of resilience and chardi kala spirit in the face of adversity in the days, months, and years since 2012.

The Sikh Coalition has participated in numerous commemorations of the Oak Creek shooting over the past 12 years. We’ve also held a congressional briefing, launched the Remember Oak Creek Learning Hub website alongside Revolutionary Love, and implemented a national media campaign.

Through all of these commemorative efforts and our broader work in other areas, we remain committed to remembering those we lost in the Oak Creek tragedy.

Twelve years ago today, a white supremacist gunman with neo-Nazi ties attacked a gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, in what was, at the time, one of the deadliest assaults on a house of worship in U.S. history.

Today, we join the broader community in Oak Creek and Sikhs across the nation to pause in remembrance of that horrific attack.

Back in March, the Sikh Coalition published and presented a new education resource, a lesson plan titled Unveiling Bhagat Singh Thind’s Journey, developed by the Sikh Coalition and Dr. Pritpal Kaur.

The lesson plan, which guides 11th grade students through the context and impact of Thind’s court case, was designed in accordance with not only California’s U.S. History and Geography standards, but also the state’s Ethnic Studies Principles and Values.

Last week, PBS released this 12 minute documentary titled "How A Supreme Court Case Redefined Whiteness". They ask the question 'What does this case, United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind, tell us about the larger history of race, white supremacy, and citizenship in America?'”

Since receiving reports in summer 2022 that CBP officers were seizing and destroying the dastaars of Sikh migrants, The Sikh Coalition has been working with the ACLU, ACLU-AZ, and other partners for a range of advocacy work in response to this unacceptable behavior.

We continue on work to ensure that Sikh migrants are treated with dignity in U.S. detention centers and provided resources about the asylum system to Sikh asylees and their attorneys.

“Badhesha becomes the first person from the Sikh community to be appointed to the Fresno County Superior Court Bench – a journey two decades in the making.

Being part of this youth-led civic “translation” would ultimately inspire Yashpreet to equip the next generation of Sikh American mobilizers with the tools they need to navigate U.S. politics for themselves and their elders. He spends much of his time collaborating with colleagues in New York City, where he’s looking to mobilize Sikh communities to vote.

To this end, he started training young go-getters as part of a new fellowship program.

Sikh Coalition Community Development Manager Yashpreet Singh spoke to about our upcoming civic engagement work, including the launch of our inaugural GOTV fellowship this year.

This past Friday, the NJ Assembly voted to advance the state’s Freedom to Read Act, which will protect access to diverse and inclusive library materials. More information here: https://bit.ly/45M60TE

As a reminder, the Sikh Coalition has advocated for this legislation with letters of support and a targeted action campaign for sangat members to contact their assemblymembers.

We also facilitated NJ high schooler Rajinder Singh's testimony in favor of this bill before the Assembly Education Committee earlier this month, as well as the publication of President of the Franklin Township Board of Education Ardaman Singh's supportive op-ed in NJ dot com.

On June 18, Sikh Coalition Senior State Policy Manager Harmeet Kaur Kamboj joined allies to deliver testimony and remarks at a press conference in support of New York City Resolution 0095.

This important proposal would ensure that the NYC Department of Education provides a religious diversity education curriculum in the city's public schools, as well as support professional development for teachers—both positive, proactive efforts to stop bullying and harassment of religious youth from all communities.
