Tomorow is the first day of school for the New Kensington-Arnold (Valley) School District. This also means school buses will be traveling the streets of our city again. Motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing, and stop arm extended; and motorists must wait until the red lights have stopped flashing, and the stop arm has been fully withdrawn before moving. Every year, students are injured by drivers passing stopped school buses.

If you are convicted of violating Pennsylvaniaโ€™s School Bus Stopping Law, you will receive aฬฒlฬฒlฬฒ of the following penalties:
-$250 fine
-Five (5) points on your driving record
-60-day driver's license suspension

More than 700 drivers are convicted for passing a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing in Pennsylvania annually. Please use caution when driving near school busses this school year!

All 5 companies assisted with the Officer Brian Shaw Memorial Scholarship Ride this morning. Our primary responsibility was shutting down intersections as the miles long line of motorcycles made its way through the city. We would like to thank Lower Burrell VFC No. 1, and Upper Burrell Volunteer Fire Company #1 for helping secure intersections in New Kensington; and for Upper Burrell Truck 115 for helping Truck 1 with the flag display at city hall.

Engine 2 and Truck 1 attended a preplanning drill yesterday morning at Lower Burrell Manor in Lower Burrell hosted by Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Company #3 in coordination with Lower Burrell Emergency Management Agency - LBEMA. A fire was simulated in 4th floor apartment. Firefighters responded as they would in a real scenario stretching hose lines, and deploying equipment (no hose lines were charged with water). This "dress rehearsal" helped Lower Burrell VFC #3, and their EMA by implementing their preplan in a controlled environment, as well as identifying strengths & areas of improvement. We would like to thank Lower Burrell VFC #3 for their invitation to yesterday's training.

This afternoon at 17:23, all 5 companies responded to what was dispatched as a house fire on the 1000 block of Kenneth Avenue. Firefighters found illegal burning taking place in the back yard which produced enough to smoke to be mistaken for a structure fire.

Burning in your backyard is dangerous anytime; but especially this time of the year since its occasionally windy, and foliage hasn't fully developed yet. Both of those factors significantly increase the chances of a small burn pile turning into an uncontrolled fire that could potentially spread to a home or building. Burning can also release toxic chemicals that are dangerous for your family, neighbors, and pets to breathe in. It's also illegal, in most cases, within city limits. If you have unneeded materials, consider an alternative to getting rid of them other than burning in your yard.
