๐ Congratulations to our June Partner of the Month, Attorney Jahida Lewis-Crawford with Law Office of Lewis-Crawford. She alongside her sister Zyairre Lewis, teacher at Hazel Park/Hilda Knoff Elementary School initiated Beautiful Me, Gentleman Me. This program aims to cultivate leadership and interpersonal skills among students in grades 3 to 8 at Hazel Park/Hilda Knoff School. Students engage in weekly meetings, etiquette classes, leadership building skills, and so much more. Jahida and Zyairre would like to encourage other business owners to take what they love doing and share that with students in JP Schools.
Thank you for supporting JP Schools! ๐

๐Why is Summer Bridge Literacy Camp a priority?
Jefferson Parish Schools is committed to ensuring that all students are reading on level by 3rd grade. We know that students who are not fluently reading on level will struggle as they progress in grade level and content becomes more difficult. Providing opportunities for students to engage in literacy learning over the summer allows for continued support for our students to ensure they are on track in their literacy development.
The Louisiana Department of Education is requiring that all 3rd-grade students are screened utilizing the DIBELS Literacy Screener. Additionally, any 4th-grade student who scored Basic or below on their 2023 LEAP ELA Assessment were also screened utilizing the DIBELS Literacy Screener. Because this is a requirement, Jefferson Parish has planned to have a spot for every eligible student in our Summer Bridge Literacy Camp.
โ๏ธ3rd Grade: Students were screened in fall, winter, and spring using the DIBELS assessment. If a child scored below or well-below grade level, a notification was sent via parent letter, and a literacy plan was implemented.
โ๏ธ4th Grade: Students were screened in winter and spring using the DIBELS assessment. If a child scored below or well below grade level, a notification was sent via parent letter, and a literacy plan was implemented.
๐How can we support your child?
By attending Summer Bridge Literacy Camp, your child will receive over 30 hours of reading instruction. Additionally, we will continue to assess, monitor, and screen your childโs reading levels as part of their literacy plans.
The Louisiana Department of Education also offers literacy tutoring through the Steve Carter Literacy Tutoring Program. To participate in the program, families must register their student using their Louisiana Department of Education Student ID, obtained from their school.
๐What if a child does not attend Summer Bridge or participate in 30 hours of required learning?
A student qualifying for summer literacy interventions who fails to participate in the program but scored Basic or higher on the ELA portion of the most recent LEAP assessment may be promoted to the next grade level.
Per LDOE guidance, it is required and there will be a meeting, where all data is reviewed at the beginning of the school year to determine whether retention or another option for additional student support is in the best interest of the student.
If you have any specific questions regarding Summer Bridge, please contact your childโs principal.

Last week, members of HPHK's Beautiful Me & Gentleman in Me club were able to visit Chief Judge Lee Faulkner's chambers.
The students were able to watch real court cases and judge decisions live in action. After court, Judge Faulkner met with students, explained some law terms, and answered the students' questions.
