Congratulations to our extraordinary nurse, Nicole Canarte, who was honored with the DAISY Foundation Award for Excellence in Nursing!

In her nomination letter, a patient parent wrote, "Nurse Nicole was our nurse for multiple nights. She was the best! So kind and thorough; she informed us of everything and was wonderful with our baby despite being very busy. She never rushed her time with us. Her cheerful disposition put me at ease and made our stay better. She was fabulous! Nurse Nicole also checked on me, the mom, every time she was in our room. As a nervous crying mother, this meant a lot to me."

Thank you, Nicole, for taking the very best care of your patients and advocating from the heart.

When Madilyn was born, she was in critical condition. In addition to underdeveloped left lung and heart issues, she was also born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) on her right side. CDH happens when the diaphragm doesn't fully develop, leaving a gap that allows abdominal organs to move into the chest cavity, causing interference with lung and heart function.

Maddie was urgently transferred to Children’s Hospital New Orleans, where she was admitted to their Level IV NICU for the highest level of care available in the region. After 2 surgeries and 3 months in the hospital, Maddie was finally able to go home in February. Read her whole story here: https://bit.ly/3VRRVjX.

Sade McGrew, a recent college graduate 🎓 has been living with sickle cell disease for 22 years. Since she was a baby, she has been under the care of her pediatric hematologist, Dr. Lolie Yu at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. 💙 💚

“When I see Dr. Yu, I’ll get a blood test to check on my hemoglobin and ferritin levels, which include my iron and my red blood cell counts to ensure everything is normal,” said Sade. “Dr. Yu also checks my eyes and adjusts my medications as needed based on how I respond to treatment.”

Sade’s daily treatment regimen includes medication such as hydroxyurea to prevent her red blood cells from sickling, folic acid to support the production of new red blood cells and to relieve joint pain and inflammation, and penicillin to reduce the risk of infection due to her missing spleen.

Her encouraging message to other patients and families struggling with sickle cell disease is this: “Don’t let it stop you. I know it can be physically and mentally hard – but don’t let it stop you from achieving your goals or following your dreams. You can do anything if you believe in yourself." ❤️ Learn about our extraordinary sickle cell care team at www.chnola.org/sicklecell

When Jamie was two years old, her usually animated spirit started to get weighed down by physical changes. Her mom, Meagan, knew from her experience as a home health nurse that Jamie required specialized attention. "That's why we took the initiative to bypass our primary care clinic and head straight to Children's Hospital New Orleans on our own. We believe their comprehensive pediatric services were the best possible option for our daughter," Meagan said.

An MRI at CHNOLA revealed the unexpected: Jamie had a juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma - a rare, benign childhood tumor.

Jamie received care from the neurosurgery team just hours after arriving at the hospital. Then, a unique care plan was tailored specifically for Jamie: regular MRI scans and routine check-ups, placing a port for more comfortable chemotherapy sessions, physical therapy, and working with the eye care and endocrinology teams to monitor her vision and hormonal health, respectively.

Two years since the diagnosis and the beginning of her chemotherapy regimen, Jamie's tumor has shown signs of shrinking, and she has regained her coordination and is exploring her world with the energy typical of kids her age.

“Remarkably, despite undergoing intensive chemotherapy, she has displayed incredible strength, rarely falling ill or experiencing severe side effects. It's a testament to both Jamie's strength and the quality of the care she received.”
