This time of year always brings heavy emotions for me. In September of 2001, just before 9/11, I met Mark Bingham
—an unforgettable presence. He asked me to paint a bear claw tattoo on his shoulder. I often asked people if they were getting it for courage, and when I asked Mark, he smiled and said, 'Yeah, you never know when you'll need a little extra courage, right?, as he winked at me. We instantly clicked, and he even thought about staying a few more days, but he decided to fly back with his friend.
Before he left, he promised to call me when ne got home.
I never got that call.
Exactly a year later, two men approached me and said they had seen me on the Mark Bingham Memorial website. At first, I didn't know what they meant, but then one of them showed me a photo of me painting Mark's tattoo. My heart sank. That's when I realized why I had felt such an unshakable sense of loss on 9/11. I had been angry, thinking he'd forgotten to call, only to find out he was that brave man I had heard about who saved Flight 93 from crashing into the White House.
On top of the sadness, I felt guilt. I had the feeling if I had only pushed him a little harder, he would've delayed his flight and stayed with me a few more days. That will always haunt me.
Mark's mother, Alice, became a source of comfort. For many years after, we would talk on the anniversary of 9/11. She shared stories about Mark and his life. I always told her how happy he seemed during his last moments, which brought her peace. Alice passed in 2020, but my connection to Mark still feels as strong as ever.
It may sound strange, but I like to think my little bear claw tattoo gave him a small bit of courage in those final moments. To this day, the tattoo remains a symbol of the strength and bravery he showed when it mattered most.
Remembering Mark and all the souls lost on that day. You will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸💔
