The subtle glow of the candle light on the items nearby was the biggest challenge with this painting. All in all, I’m fairly pleased with the results - what are your thoughts?

NEW Work in Progress , 16x20 still life, oil on linen canvas

Just finished this 32x48 inch oil on canvas, master copy of Caravaggio’s ‘St Jerome’ and it’s pretty serendipitous that I would complete this painting today, January 5th. With that said I dedicate this painting to my Dad that was an absolute brilliant artist at an early age, and in which I learned a ton indirectly through his drawings. He passed 45 years ago today unexpectedly but still managed to teach me a ton about art all the same.

Also I had a lot of people ask why I chose this painting to work on so I put together a few reasons for those that are curious.
Why Caravaggio’s ‘St Jerome’ :
1. I knew i wanted to go to the source of chiaroscuro lighting in painting form so I knew I wanted to paint a Caravaggio
2. On a symbolic note, the general theme of “getting the work done” (St. Jerome writing) with the meditation and awareness that time is fleeting and passing (the skull presence in the painting) were both strong elements in this painting and I strongly identify with this feeling on a quite literally a daily basis. I feel as if I am in a constant meditation of the fact that life is fleeting so I’d rather be submerged in the creative “work” that I am capable of doing as much as physically possible while I can. Also events throughout my entire life have definitely set the ground work for this resounding theme in my personal life.
3. Also on a strictly utilitarian note, this is the painting in which my understanding of the old techniques finally “clicked” for me. Not that I have TOTAL understanding in the least - that can take a lifetime!- but this was the image I was viewing very closely when a reasonable amount of understanding seemed to form for me and I thought, ok, let’s give it a go! Definitely a big believer in following the “thread of creativity” meaning follow the thread of knowledge and in an organic way take the next move as it presents itself.

Seen here is a 5x7 Ambrotype, which consists of handmade collodion film which is poured onto glass plates that I cut by hand. The glass plate is exposed and then developed immediately, just moments after the photo is taken. It is then dried and a handmade varnished is applied. All chemistry recipes used in the process date back to the 1850’s.
This is truly a handmade photograph on glass via the 19th century photographic process commonly called wet plate colldion photography.
