Getting ready for the sword demo tomorrow.
Formerly known as Camp Washburn:
A Civil War reception center and trading post established in October 1861, Camp Washburn was located on the old Cold Spring Racetrack west of 27th Street, which at the time of the war was outside of the city limits of Milwaukee.
Camp Washburn saw the training of the 28th, 34th, 35th, 39th, 43rd, 48th & 51st Wisconsin VI, the 13th Battery WI Light Artillery, and Colonel Thomas Stephens' 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry.
I have concluded another leg of my research journey to obtain access to original copies of diverse fencing treatises in the US Army historical collection.
Getting fitted for a new sword belt by Mr. Ray Buchheister who has been a Civil War re-enactor for over 34 years. He was in several scenes of the movie Gettysburg.
Visiting the gravesite of George Minniss who was an instructor of the sword exercise in Boston and in 1833 published his treatise on the Infantry Sword exercise.
Visiting the historical site of the Williamsburg Printing Office where William Parks printed the very first fencing treatise in America which was authored by Edward Blackwell in 1734.
On this date in 1863:
Rufus Dawes, who was one of the many noteworthy officers of the Iron Brigade who was trained in swordsmanship by Colonel Thomas Stephens at Camp Randall led the 6th Wisconsin in a charge at Gettysburg after having his horse shot out from under him.
As the 6th Wisconsin advanced to the Chambersburg Pike, General Joe Davis’s Mississippi Brigade also advanced from the west to the same spot. The Mississippi men fired upon the Wisconsin men, which Dawes described as “terribly destructive”. The 6th pushed relentlessly on, charging into the men in butternut. Davis’s men retreated into the unfinished railroad cut.
As the 6th Wisconsin pressed onward, there were three New York regiments in the vicinity, part of Lysander Cutler’s Brigade. Two of them, the 95th New York and the 14th Brooklyn, fell in line with the Wisconsin men, forming an extended line on their left flank. They fired on the Southern troops, who descended into the unfinished railroad cut. One of the New York men said that the arrival of the Wisconsin regiment “caused our hearts to beat fast with joy and thankfulness.” Dawes and his men had arrived at precisely the right time.
Dawes had lost his horse in the charge, as the mare was shot in the chest. He continued, unflinching, on foot. As the blue line rushed to the cut, firing upon the beleaguered Confederates, the fight soon came to an end, with Dawes demanding the surrender of the Mississippi men. He asked one of the officers, “Where is the colonel of this regiment?” The officer, a major, ignorantly replied, “Who are you?” Dawes tersely answered that he was the commander of the regiment that had just bested them, and that they had better surrender or be shot. The major immediately gave Dawes his sword. In all, seven swords were handed to him that morning. They captured the 2nd Mississippi’s battle flag, and about 250 prisoners.

There will be no classes for the month of July as we will be on summer break. Classes will resume in August under a new schedule. Sunday classes will be at the same but we will be cancelling Monday classes due to my work schedule and other requirements.
I will be looking into the possibility of a late evening Tuesday class that starts at 8:00 pm if there is enough interest. Otherwise we will be just training on Sundays starting in August.
There will be no classes on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
