We are very proud that for 8 years that we, THE
IZAKAYA NYC did not have to depend on "SUSHI" (or
Ramen) that everyone knows and loves just to bring
in customers ignoring the concept and core of
IZAKAYA (small plates with sake). I wanted to just
say to everyone that Japan has much more than
sushi and ramen and we have them here, and for
good sushi, I recommend you go to sushi restaurant
(many serious ones in NYC. Go to .newyork).
The fact that so many customers asked for sushi and
leave the restaurant because we don't have them did
not change our core and style. We are "THE IZAKAYA
NYC".
When I found this beautiful sushi by my favorite artist
and good friend , I immediately said
"I want to serve these sushi at my restaurant!"

Small Subjects by Garam Song for 7th Anniversary of The Izakaya NYC

Curation of antique objects including animal toys, handmade wooden dice from late 1800s to early 1900s.

For 7th anniversary of The Izakaya NYC, we gave a renovation to our space. Directed by the father of The Izakaya NYC, and built by his construction team. He intended to apply small showcases on the wall to have art around customers while dinning. All the new wooden furnitures, benches, walls and shelves are Hand dyed and built, with Kakishibu dye (fermented persimmon juice), a traditional dying technique from Japan. The floors are painted with Japanese construction Yellow which brightens the space and atmosphere.

Our first exhibition is called “Small Subjects” by Garam Celina Song ( .s_ ).

it is amazing to sit inside kotatsu table in the snow, just like monkeys in the hot spring in the snow storm. I want everyone to try this while we have them. Do not miss this amazing opportunity.

By the way, just like the snow or the cold air makes the hot spring experience even better for monkeys, we should keep them and use them to maximize the potential of outdoor dining instead of hiding the snow or blocking the cool air to make your outdoor almost like indoor..

Making outdoor almost like indoor is not the answer for this winter. I wanted to stress this part.

What is amazing about kotatsu dining? (Tips for successful outdoor dining)

1. Safe. Our kotatsu outdoor dining space is not enclosed on any side. It is wide open. Wind, sound of breeze, snow, cold air, is a must for beautiful outdoor dining. We also added the partitions between tables to provide extra safety.

2. Warm. Putting your feet inside kotatsu table in the blanket, raises your body temperature and it reaches to the perfect cozy temperature so you are not freezing. It’s not hot but just good. You can never make it like indoor so do not even try. Hokkaido where I am from is much colder and more snow, you will find a photo of people eating jingisukan bbq in the igloo with kotatsu table comfortably. That’s how much kotatsu table can warm you up. Monkeys in hotspring feel warm with just their feet in the hot water. Warming up your lower body is the key.

Remember, heat goes up and wind blows the heat away so heat lamps that are high up would not do much. It will send little bit of warm air but will not raise your body temperature. Kotatsu heaters do that.

3. Kotatsu heaters do not need high wattage to function. Lots of strong electric heaters that you can buy here use so much power and you might need to increase the power which is pain in the ass.

4. Looks beautiful aesthetically. Looks cozy with light from kotatsu heater. Nice blankets will make the space even more beautiful.
