Why does Chan Tai San's Lama Pai have so many throwing techniques and lines up so well with Shuai Jiao? It is actually an easy answer IF you know history and context.

"Lama Pai" was a name coined in Southern China for what had originally been called "Lion's Roar". The reason was that the primary teacher in the lineage was affiliated with Lamaism / Vajrayana / Tibetan Buddhism. And he came from a region that at the time (Qing Dynasty) was considered part of "Tibet"... but it today is Qinghai province

This was China's "wild west" and among the many people who practiced this method were Tibetans, Manchurians, Muslims and of course Mongolians. The importance of wrestling to Mongolians can never been understated.

Shuai Jiao, particularly our Bao Ding lineage, was of course practiced by Muslims (the Hui), but its foundations are Mongolian wrestling.

So, when you understand this, and know how important and influential Mongolian wrestling has always been, you understand that both traditions owe much of their foundation to this
