"Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall." - F. Scott Fitzgerald

Autumn is here and with the changing seasons it's finally time to enjoy fall activities! This season is an opportune time for seniors to get out and enjoy outdoor recreations. Here are a few outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by all:

• Leaf Peeping can be a fun, stress-reducing activity where you can get lost in your admiration of nature's beauty. It's also fun for everyone and a healthy outdoor exercise for the elderly.
• Bird watching is another healthy outdoor activity that seniors can enjoy in the fall. The Autumn season brings a unique flair to the exercise, adding a splash of color to the familiar landscapes and providing a more invigorating climate.
• Farmer's Markets, one of the best ways to relish in the fall is to indulge in fresh, local produce and products.

Whether you decide to only try one of these suggestions or try them all, the goal is to have fun, get some exercise and experience the outdoors this fall!

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are bringing you this Tuesday Tip – Get a Medical Checkup!

Early detection and treatment is still the best strategy for a better cancer outcome. The American Cancer Society recommends women ages 40 to 44 should have a choice to start yearly screening mammograms if they would like. Women ages 45 to 54 should have a mammogram each year, and those 55 years and over should continue getting mammograms every 1 to 2 years.

Have a medical checkup and mammogram on a regular basis, and speaking with your doctor can give you a better sense of what's right for you.

Flu season is here and for older adults it can pose a serious threat for a few reasons. As we age our immune system weakens, and if our body is too busy fighting the flu, we can pick up a secondary infection such as pneumonia. Also, older adults are more likely to have other health conditions, like diabetes, that increase their risk for complications from the flu.

With the vaccine, it can reduce your risk of getting the flu or getting seriously ill if you do get sick. The flu vaccination is especially helpful for people with chronic health conditions. In addition to getting your flu vaccine, you can help stop the spread of flu with the following actions:

• Washing your hands
• Covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze
• Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
• Staying home when you are sick
• Avoiding close contact with people who are sick

Stay protected and enjoy what the autumn season has to offer without worrying about getting sick!

This week's Tuesday Tip is a that applies to all ages – Eat a Healthy Diet!

No matter your age, it’s important to take care of your body and prevent illness. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean meats also give your immune system a boost and protect against harmful viruses and bacteria that cause illnesses. You should also limit your intake of sugary and fatty foods, which can trigger inflammation in the body and lower your immune system.

Staying active, eating a good mix of fresh foods, spending a moderate amount of time outside in the sun, and getting as much quality sleep as possible can help keep your immune system in good shape.

Our philosophy is to keep your loved ones in the comfort of their own home without compromising anything.

When many people think of assisted care, they often think of a caregiver completing every task, taking away their much-needed sense of independence.

When you turn to Affirmed Home Care for geriatric care management, we encourage your loved ones to make decisions and complete daily activities as much as they can while still being safe. Think of us as a helping hand that’s there to keep an eye on them while still respecting their privacy.
