Summer Academy provides our high school students the perfect opportunity to experience new things. Exploring Governors Island on a bicycle, while admiring the picturesque views, offers an excellent way to blend physical exercise with sightseeing.

During Summer Academy, students had the opportunity to partake in a variety of activities. Office game days included playing Monopoly, Brawl Starz, or assembling a puzzle. It brings us joy to see them creating lasting memories with their peers during this summer period.

Chess in the Schools supports students in achieving academic goals. Hellen Pena, learned chess in elementary school, went on to join the College Bound program in high school, and recently graduated from the University of Rochester. Congratulations Hellen!

“I would not be here if it wasn’t for Chess in the Schools. I have been a part of the community since I was 5 years old playing in weekly tournaments and have been unwaveringly supported throughout all these years. Almost everyone at CIS has seen me grow up… Shaun, Ron, Will, Marc, Mr. Fitzko to name a few… and Mr. Thomas Haggins and Mrs. Ruth Fermin. I owe each one of them a piece of my degrees. My entire schooling career was a team effort, thus I congratulate them as well. From the bottom of my heart, although my education doesn’t stop here, I thank Chess in the Schools for being on this journey with me” (Hellen Pena).
