YWCA Retirement Fund’s offices are closed today and will reopen tomorrow.

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, and Emancipation Day, became the latest U.S. federal holiday in 2021 and the first to be approved since Martin Luther King Day in 1983.

Its origins date back to June 19, 1865, when Union Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming that the enslaved people there were free. This was two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, which couldn’t be enforced in areas under Confederate control.

The Fund is one of the oldest pension plans in the country, the first pension fund for women, and it predates Social Security.
