BAR RECS 🥃 If you’ve been to Gus’s lately, you’ve likely seen Sother Teague behind the bar. What drew him to ? ‘I love a local spot with an emphasis on hospitality. Plus is a chef with a similar sensibility who’s putting out interesting food at neighborhood prices.’ (We agree)
The 24-year NYC bartending vet and bar owner—w/ two books and a radio show—knows where to drink around town, and graciously shared some recs with us here:
(Boerum Hill)—This neighborhood spot on a sunny corner always features a themed menu, currently Grand Ole Opry. A robust raw bar and plenty of snacks, and owner is my cohost on our award-winning@speakeasypodcast on .
(LES)—An unassuming spot with a secretly stellar cocktail list. Snug booths, curtained walls, and movies on the big-screen give it a cozy feel. Many NY bartending legends have or currently helm the bar so you’re always in trustworthy hands.
(Cobble Hill)—Fun fact: owner of LIB is verifiably the creator of the Cosmopolitan. ’s bar aesthetic is like a love letter to a 50’s diner: steel-legged stools, bright red vinyl cushions, a retro backbar. Drinks are a great blend of modern + classic, and the food is a look at Toby’s youth: fried cheese curds, deviled eggs and smoked trout spread.
(LES)—I’ve been a Sunday fixture here since they opened almost 9 years ago. It’s a small bar with a Japanese sensibility from owner Kenta Goto, plus delicious cocktails and my favorite bar snack: raw celery. I never leave without having a Gibson. Here, the pickled onion substituted with a rakyo*—Japanese pickled scallion—and I love it. Join me at .
*If you’d like me to mix you a Gibson at Gus’s, I keep a jar of rakyo behind the bar.
(LES)—Full disclosure, I own this bar. The name means Love and Bitters. We have the largest collection of both amaro and bitters in the world. All are drinks are stirred and feature bitters or amaro. We’ve garnered int’l acclaim for our offerings, service and hospitality. 13 yrs old, still feels brand new. I’d love you to visit and see for yourself.
Fresh-baked, salty-sweet, flakey, buttery Salted Maple Pie, with that perfect cloud-like dollop of whipped cream on top.
