The Fort Tryon Park Trust conservancy monitors them for Dutch elm disease, a devastating fungus that has been spreading by bark beetles since the 1930s. American elms have twisting, upper branches that form an elegant silhouette against the sky. Elms tend to have shallow root systems and the trees are easily stressed by soil compaction.
