Eric and Bruce Bromberg and the Blue Ribbon team are extremely saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Peter Guzy.

Peter had been our architect, along with his partner Edward Asfour, for over 34 years and more than 25 restaurants. We haven’t opened a restaurant or created a Blue Ribbon without him in our entire professional careers.

In early 2020, we embarked on our most ambitious project yet with Peter once again at the helm and at the center of our creative process - three restaurants that will open over the next 10 months in Boston’s Kenmore Square neighborhood. The scale of the project was initially daunting, but Peter and his team at Guzy Architects worked tirelessly to develop and design three signature restaurants that will endure for decades.

During this process, Peter was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare and brutal form of brain cancer. Peter’s relentless desire to beat the cancer and finish the project drove us all through this incredibly difficult time, and to make it the best work we have done together. There was an incredible amount of passion and purpose, and every decision and detail took on new meaning for us all.

At the heart of the project is an iconic storefront that will be transformed into a grand Blue Ribbon Brasserie. Peter pushed and pushed for the inclusion of a spectacular solarium to adorn the facade; he felt it would be a beacon, a landmark something that the people of Boston would identify with and love. He felt it would benefit the community and neighborhood, and of course create a special sense of place for the restaurant. He fought tirelessly for this element to be approved and for us to be able to build it. It took more than a year to get that approval but it was finally approved just a week before Peter’s passing.

Peter finished the creative process and designed us three amazing places with humor, dignity and compassion. The restaurants are nearing completion, and will soon be filled with some great jazz music, people laughing and joyful patrons feasting on Blue RIbbon fare, taking in the atmosphere, and of course feeling Peter’s spirit - and for that we are forever grateful.

Peter’s wife Diane, daughter Juliana, and son Alden supported Peter and us endlessly throughout this whole process, dealing with setbacks, anguish and, at times, small victories, with compassion and purpose. His ability to create beautiful works is a testament to their love, support and mutual admiration as a family.
