How deep do you like your DNA damage?
Fact: Cytokines can make you depressed.
It's so let's talk about the cytokine theory of depression and the link between psoriasis and mental health.
What are cytokines?
π¦ Immune cells release massive amounts of cytokines when they are under attack.
π¦ Cytokines cause inflammation, activate other immune cells, and are the first response in a full-force immune reaction. In any disease that increases inflammation, these cytokines can negatively affect mood.
What happens in Psoriasis?
π₯In psoriasis, overactive white blood cells produce excessive cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-17 (IL-6).
π₯These molecules trigger inflammation in various organs and expedite skin cell growth, leading to common physical symptoms associated with psoriasis.
How do Cytokines affect mood?
π¦ Cytokines mean well, but their inflammation is non-specific. Even if they are released in the skin, they can travel throughout the body and affect multiple organs.
π§ One of these organs is the brain, chronic stress and inflammation can lead to depression. Specifically, cytokines inhibit glutamine, decrease serotonin, cause neurotoxicity, and decrease neuron remodeling.
π§ π§ Cytokines cause increased activity in the basal ganglia causing fatigue, this is the most prominent feature of cytokine-induced depression.
π§ͺ Important: This is a CHEMICAL reaction. Depression is not anyone's fault.
Good News:
π§ π₯° Evidence shows that improvement of psoriasis and reduction of inflammation drastically improve mood. No doubt because of decreased inflammation, besides, who wouldnβt be thrilled to clear up their psoriasis.
π©π»ββοΈ Fun fact: As a board-certified dermatologist I treat mild, severe, and medically complex psoriasis.
