Attention❗

🌈 Applications for the Fall 2024 in-person cycle of Drag Performance are now OPEN! 🌈

❗Submissions are due by 11:59pm on September 6th❗

*Criteria: You must be 21+ years of age and not currently enrolled full time in school in order to participate in this program.

🗓 When: Monday nights from September 30, 2024 through December 14, 2024 at BAX from 6:30-8:45pm

👢 Class dates: September 30 (first class); October 7, 21, 28; November 4, 11, 18, 25; December 2, 9, 10* (extra optional rehearsal). NOTE: No class on October 14 in observance of Indigenous People’s Day.

👠 Tech Rehearsal dates: December 11-13

🥾 Dress Rehearsal & Culminating Showcase: December 14, 2024

⭐ Facilitated by: Theydy Bedbug (aka Kelindah bee Schuster) and Guest Artists, The Maine Attraction & Zenobia

This class focuses on developing drag characters that expand what it means to be a drag queen, king, thing, in between or beyond what we’ve seen. Through group games, writing prompts and discussion, solo and collaborative movement exercises, we give ourselves permission to express the full range of who we are and can be while releasing narratives about how we “should” move, express, or dress based on gender norms we’ve inherited.

We experiment with the tools of pantomime, clowning, lip sync, caricature, structured improv and intuitive movement to build towards in-process drag performance acts. While this class is focused primarily on performance skills, we touch upon what goes into making a drag act including: makeup, costumes, creating a musical track, movement choreography and technical production choices.

Congratulations to BAX’s 2024 Teen Artist Exchange participants for an exceptional event this year! 🎉

Talented teen artists, workshop facilitators, and company directors from MCC Manhattan and Brooklyn Youth Companies, Irondale Ensemble Project, Dancewave and BAX’s own Dance Performance Workshop ensembles (and beyond) came together for an afternoon of interactive workshops in:

⭐️ Peer Leadership ⭐️
⭐️ Drag Performance ⭐️

At BAX we lift up the Black lives, stories, and voices across all our intergenerational programs. This month, BAX students, families, and teachers drew inspiration from such monthly awareness campaigns as Black Lives Matter in School Action (week of February 5-8) and Black History Month, celebrating the 13 guiding principles of the BLM movement with our living gallery.

We invite our intergenerational community of resident artists, students, families, and renters to join us and contribute a coloring page(s) to our living gallery walls throughout the building. You can also check out BAX's living, year-round, anti-racist family resource webpage below for more inspirations and materials.

Congratulations AGAIN to BAX’s 2024 YouthWorks ensemble!

The showcase featured 10 original performance pieces and 19 young artists (ranging in ages from 7 to 17). Over the course of 6 weeks (from late-December through mid-February), these artists conceived, developed, rehearsed, directed and performed an incredible body of performance work in dance, theater, multimedia, poetry, and interdisciplinary performance. Some of the artists knew each other before the start of the program and others met and became collaborators at the first rehearsal in January!

Throughout the process, these artists were supported by professional artist coaches, who volunteer their time to support the development of these young artists and their art. The full list of coaches is below and we encourage you to learn about them and get to know their work! Some of our YouthWorks coaches this year are brand new to BAX, some have been coaches for many years, and some of our coaches are themselves alumni of YouthWorks, having participated in the program when they were kids. Quite simply, YouthWorks couldn’t exist without our generous and talented coaches!

Leah Woodbridge
Eddie Prunoske
Ari Wes

Weekly Drop-In Melt classes with EmmaGrace Scove-Epes start today at BAX!

Link in bio to register! Tiered pricing available.

Fridays from 6:00-7:30 pm
February 24 through April 21
*No class on Friday, March 31

What is Melt?

The MELT Method is a self-treatment technique and body literacy system that focuses on rehydrating dehydrated connective tissue throughout the body and nourishing our nervous systems. Using props, including rubber rollers and balls, we will simulate the effects of therapeutic bodywork techniques- the props will serve as the “hands” of a bodywork practitioner. Drawing from practices including CranioSacral Therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, Reflexology, Lymphatic Drainage, and Structural Integration/Rolfing, the MELT Method can help people recuperate from daily activities, including exercise, intense exertion, long periods of working at a desk or on your feet, and accumulated physical and/or emotional tension and stress. It can also be helpful in disrupting chronic pain patterns, healing from injury, preventing reinjury, helping your body prepare for or recover from surgery, and decreasing inflammation. By providing gentle compression and sensory feedback to different parts of your own body, you will learn how to systematically work with the fluid flow in your own body’s amazingly vast connective tissue matrix. Through learning to locate your fascial lines and how you can impact their interconnected currents of fluid flow, you will learn how to identify “pre-pain” signals and sensations that your body is communicating before pain or injury occur and to gently shift various physical symptoms. The MELT method, especially practiced over time, offers a way into deeper self-knowledge- allowing you to identify how you can offer yourself care and invite more ease, grounding, and deepen embodied awareness and presence.
