In keeping with Paideia tradition, a few weeks ago we wrapped up our summer programming with the celebratory talent show and feast that mark the end of Living Greek in Greece–which included a breathtaking dance performance by our 2024 Brightheart Fellow, Emily Gunter!
Inspired by the course's theme of "Helen of Sparta", Emily's choreography "investigates the opposition and balance of several parallelisms in Helen’s story: strength//weakness, truth//lies, love//loss, innocence//guilt, and choice//fate. The concept of parallelisms was initially inspired by the rhetorical use of parallel phrasing in Gorgias’s Encomium of Helen."

Some highlights included visiting the 8th century BCE Menelaion shrine to Menelaus and Helen, the deadly Cave Kaiadas (where the Spartans are said to have cruelly abandoned their unwanted), an impromptu reenactment of the murder of Agamemnon by Clytemnestra under the rain at Mycenae, and an Ancient Greek cooking class on Mount Taygetos! 🔪🛁
