Ronald Feldman Gallery

Ronald Feldman Gallery has been at the frontier of contemporary art since 1971.

Ronald Feldman Fine Arts was founded in November 1971 at 33 East 74th Street by Ronald and Frayda Feldman. In 1982, after one season with both uptown and downtown exhibition spaces, the gallery consolidated at 31 Mercer Street in SoHo. From the Archive: Cassils’ sculpture ‘Resilience of the 20%’ featured in their 2017 solo show at Ronald Feldman Gallery, ‘MONUMENTAL.’ The bronze sculpture was cast from the pummeled remnants of a clay block that resulted from their 2016 performance of Becoming an Image. Photo stills from the performance were displayed alongside the bronze.

The title, referring to the 2012 statistic of the 20% increase worldwide of murders of trans people, both commemorates the loss and the defiance of the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2017, Cassils and members of the local LGBTQIA+ community pushed the bronze through the city of Omaha, Nebraska to various sites of violence, resistance, and celebration for their performance ‘Monument Push.’

The work remains relevant today as transgender rights continue to be attacked while showing how transgender artists like Cassils stand resilient through their work in the face of ongoing oppression and prejudice.

From the archives: Ida Applebroog’s painting ‘Untitled (man crawling)’ was included in her 1987 exhibition ‘Magic Kingdom.’

15 years later, art critic Nancy Princenthal mused about her work, “Applebroog seems more than ever devoted to chronicling the banality of evil, or at least of irreparable harm, documenting the ease with which it enters otherwise unremarkable lives and the scant distinction it bestows on those it touches.”

From the Archives for Earth Day: Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrsion’s 2009 show at Ronald Feldman Gallery, ‘Global Warming.’

The exhibition featured the Harrison’s work from 1974 to 2009, which explores the topic of global warming, and notably included their multimedia installation ‘Greenhouse Britain.’ At the center of the installation is a model of the Island of Britain with six projectors displaying various maps forecasting the island’s coastline changes at incremental sea-level rises, from 2 to 16 meters. The Harrisons narrate a 10-minute record which is synchronized with these changes.

As Helen Mayer Harrison sagely prophesized nearly 15 years ago:

Finally understanding the news is neither good nor bad
it is simply that great differences are upon us
that great changes are upon all planetary life systems
and the news is about how we meet these changes
and are transformed by them or in turn transform them.

From the Archives: Detail of Ida Applebroog’s painting “Marginalia (measure feet #2)” (1991). This work was one of many freestanding towers of varying amounts of panels featured in the artist’s 1991 show “Safety Zone.” Blurring the line between painting and sculpture, the added dimensionality further emphasized the panels’ vague vignettes and compelled the viewer to confront the open-endedness of her visual vocabulary.

For International Womens’s Day, we celebrate long time Feldman Gallery team member and friend Elaine Angelopoulos for her participation in the recent donation of historic content to the New York Public Library Archives. As an artist, Elaine documented the civil rights protests in the early 90’s, mostly for the videography and photographic sector of the Women’s Action Coalition of which she was a member.

Sparked in the 1990’s WAC responded to the direct need of advocacy of Women’s rights. They organized weekly meetings, hosting hundreds of women in discussions regarding various fronts of oppression, organized protests, and documented the turn of events. WAC educated and inspired the next generation of activists to step into their power by means of community, discussion and more importantly, action. The WAC archives can be found at the New York Public Library Schwartzman Branch, in the Archives Division.

We are excited that today is the opening day for “All These Different Things are Sculpture,” a retrospective of Feldman Gallery Emeritus Artist Terry Fox’s oeuvre at Artists Space. The exhibition features videos and sound works, as well as documentation of the artist’s performances, spanning decades that highlight Fox’s use of unconventional materials and methods to express the ephemerality of existence. “All These Different Things are Sculpture” will be on view until May 11. “‘She would get her images from life, from everywhere in the culture. And she would recontextualize them and make new associations,’ Marco Nocella, who met the artist when he began working at Feldman in 1986, recalled in a phone interview. ‘So many people would want to know the meaning of Ida’s work. What struck me is that conceptually, it was open-ended and it was meant to be completed by the viewer.’”

Jomani Danielle (), RFG Gallery associate, moderated an artist talk earlier this week for the solo exhibition of Haitian American artist Watson Mere () entitled “ You Are The Myth,” presented by ChaShaMa (). The discussion focused on the artist’s Haitian background and interest in the spirituality of the African and Caribbean diaspora. An excerpt of the award-winning play "The Fourth Alaafin of Oyo" by Taiwo Aloba was reenacted for the audience in front of the piece “Sango Baba Wa” created by Watson Mere in 2023, based off his experience starring in the leading role as Sango.
