Glaad’s Bold New Mission: an L.G.B.T. Constitutional Amendment Led by its chief executive, Sarah Kate Ellis, the gay rights group is moving beyond Hollywood and toward national politics, raising eyebrows among some of its allies.
“The passage of this Resolution sends a clear message that the City of Atlanta will always stand for equality and human dignity—regardless of who you are or who you love,” said Mayor Bottoms. “State-sanctioned practices that inflict persecution and suffering on LGBTQ individuals—particularly young people—should end immediately. Simply put—we cannot and should not endanger the well-being of the LGBTQ community for living their truth. This administration and the City respectfully calls on our State partners to join us on the right side of history."

Some amazing things happened yesterday across our nation and we cannot be disheartened:
We regained a majority for LGBTQ equality and acceptance in the U.S. House of Representatives, giving us our first opportunity to put this Administration in check, protect the progress we have made, and move forward an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would provide explicit anti-nondiscrimination protections for women, the LGBTQ community, people of color, and those with disabilities.
We returned out U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin to Washington, DC to represent Wisconsin for another term.
We helped Colorado become the first state to elect an openly gay man as Governor, and elected the nation’s first out Native American member of Congress in Kansas.
And we made history in Massachusetts by passing the first statewide popular referendum in support of transgender Americans.
But yesterday is about more than just the sum of our victories. All across the country we demonstrated that you can try to erase us, but we will come back stronger.

We want to give you a chance to get to know some of the extraordinary members of this community through our Member Spotlight Series. This week, Elliot Simon is in the spotlight. Elliot has been a member of GLAAD since 1993 -- this year marks 25 years of membership! We are so grateful to Elliot, and to all of our wonderful members like you.
Read on to learn a little more about Elliot, and thank you so much for being a member of GLAAD.
What made you initially get involved with GLAAD?
I was in New York during the Stonewall Riots. While it’s not in my character to be particularly politically active, now that the fight was in the streets, I knew I needed to get involved. I participated in the first gay march, which has now evolved into the Pride Parade. I needed people to see that we matter and invite people to support us in this effort. I also joined a couple of political organizations, but I wanted to find something that felt just right for me. When GLAAD was established as an organization that told the community that they had our back, I knew I had to join them.
What is your favorite book or film featuring LGBTQ themes or characters?
The recent film “Call Me By Your Name.” It was heartwarming to see how the two gentlemen came to acknowledge their attraction to each other. The portrayal of the age difference was also appealing to me as an older member of the community.
What is something that you’d like to share that would help people get a better understanding of who you are?
I currently sing in the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, which was the first gay chorus to be created, 40 years ago. Now there are hundreds around the world. I’ve always wanted to be a performer, and being part of this group helps me feel like I'm fighting the fight in a way that matches my strengths and passions. In addition to thrice-a year concerts, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus goes to local elementary, middle and high schools and, after performing, we share coming out stories to help educate the youth on dealing with coming out, homophobia and bullying. One of my first performances was Andrew Lippa's “I Am Harvey Milk,” which really resonated with me since Harvey and I were both gay, Jewish men from New York. I think GLAAD supporters and members would benefit from also supporting gay-focused art groups like the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus. It’s a significant way of showing support without entering the political realm.
Any advice or words of wisdom?
I’ve always made a point of living in LGBTQ-friendly neighborhoods and found groups who accepted me exactly as I am. Even in those neighborhoods, there can be the occasional unfriendly person, but I feel lucky that I’ve been able to live authentically all these years. My prayer is that everyone, one day, will be able to just live and be accepted and respected. I think that part of the importance of coming out is inspiring others. Once we’re out, it’s important that we represent. I feel that the freer I am, the freer other people will be willing to be.
Atlanta Pride is still a few month's away, but here's a chance to get a jump on the celebration!
Pride month is a special time to celebrate the progress of the LGBTQ community -- and this year, all of us at GLAAD are raising our voices to make sure our most important victories like marriage equality won’t be ripped away.
That’s why we’ve launched the Amp Your Pride campaign -- and we need everyone to get involved! So we've created a donation page just for GLAAD Atlanta.
Every dollar we raise will go directly toward GLAAD’s culture changing work to fight for full acceptance for all LGBTQ people.
You can join the campaign by donating to help reach our goal, or you can go the extra mile and launch your very own fundraising for GLAAD and ask your friends and family to get involved, too.
Thank you so much, and Happy Pride!
