Funding for the NYC Compost Project and GrowNYC programs is set to expire on Dec 31.
The future of our city’s sustainability is at stake. 🏙 This week we'll keep working to muster support for the Climate Superfund Act, which would require the biggest polluters to pay for the damage they have caused in New York State. This bill would raise revenue from polluters-- rather than taxpayers-- to help our state pay for massive infrastructure upgrades, including flood and storm management, systems to protect people from deadly heat waves, and protections against health threats like water and air pollution.
🗽 Although the Climate Superfund Act is a state-level bill, this week we'll be working to show strong support from our NYC-based electeds in the city council, by asking them to endorse a sign-on letter in favor of the bill. Everything you need to take action is here; even if you can't make it to Power Hour, feel free to call or email your own city council member!
❗ Bonus Actions
📲 Anytime: Call Governor Hochul (866-583-2908) to urge her to put the NY HEAT Act in the budget, using the call tool from Food and Water Watch. You can do this anytime, even after hours!

🌅5 days until Cultivations 🌅
👋Today, we will introduce you to Dave — the creator and the host of the event.
🌳Dave describes himself as a writer, photographer, and infrequent activist based in Brooklyn. This deck is partially inspired by his 17-year membership in a peer-counseling community as well as connections to various activist communities since childhood.
🌆 Even as a lifelong city boy, he has always had a deep connection to nature. As it became clear to him that human activity was rapidly degrading the environment and threatening all life on Earth, like a lot of people, he has often felt anxious and helpless.
🌎 But last year after using an oracle deck at parties and dinners to encourage intimate conversations, he realized that we all could use something similar to help us work through our feelings and paralysis about environmental degradation.
☺️ In contrast to a book or article read in solitude, a card deck could also serve as a community accountability project.
🙌🏻 Dave explains: “We can support each other, work together, and gather our scraps of hope and good thinking in order to figure out what to do. This workshop is for anyone who wants to be a part of that. I've been calling this deck "Cultivations" because like cultivating a plot of land, in order to see the future we want, it's going to take time, care, respect, and collaboration."

Testify on or by October 24 – don't let weaken Local Law 97!
In 2019, New York City passed what may be the world's most ambitious law requiring major reductions in buildings' fossil fuel emissions. Now the Adams administration has proposed rules that would weaken the law and delay its start date.
The City Council can influence the final regulations, so we need them to hear us loud and clear.

✅ Productive meeting with AM Robert Carroll, .carroll, a real Climate Champion! 🙌🏻
🌎 He voiced his support for our bills & People's Budget for the coming fiscal year.
📋 Also, he gave us insightful strategic advice on how to get it all done.
🌳Actions for the week of October 16 🌎
Dear activists,
We hope everyone is connecting with their support systems and doing as well as can be with all that’s unfolding in the world. Here is our roundup of actions we can take together to help mitigate climate change.
📋🙏🏻ACTION 1: Take Our Survey!
350Brooklyn’s Steering Committee is planning for our future and we want your input. Give us your best judgements in this quick survey. 350BK is growing and we want to grow our impact. Let us know what you think!
⛽️✋🏽ACTION 2: Urge Legislators & Kick Fossil Fuels Out of Buildings!
Send an email to your legislators urging them to pass a climate budget that kicks fossil fuels out of buildings. You might be skeptical of these one-click emails, but they really add up! We actually hear from legislators that they get tons of email from the gas industry (remember that whole gas stove kerfuffle?) and they need us to outweigh the opposition.
💨🍃ACTION 3: Help Boost Offshore Wind with 350Brooklyn!
Write and submit comments in support of the Empire Wind offshore energy project on the Public Service Commission’s project page, using 350Brooklyn’s toolkit. Offshore wind is more efficient than onshore thanks to higher wind speeds, better consistency and lack of interference of human made obstacles.
Thank you, Senator Gounardes , for a great meeting on Monday. We are so proud of your support for real action on climate!
🌎💵 is launching their campaign for the People’s Climate Justice Budget — a $1 billion spending plan developed by and for New Yorkers.
🗽It outlines critical climate and environmental justice programs that New York must fund in 2024 as a downpayment on the more than $10 billion a year the state estimates is necessary to address the crisis at scale.
♻️The People’s Climate Justice Budget would kickstart a pollution-free, resilient climate future built by workers with good union jobs, ensuring a healthy, livable state for generations to come.
⛈️The climate crisis is impacting New Yorkers statewide. The need is huge—this is how we start.
