“The Possibility Project gave me a place to be heard and understood.” - 2023 Foster Care Program Participant
Young people often come to believing that the issues they face and the painful experiences they have endured are theirs alone to shoulder, that it is their responsibility to somehow “fix” themselves, by themselves. Surrounded by a community that sees their value and honors their story, that fights to change systems not individuals, participants can begin to center themselves in their own narratives and lean on their peers for support.
We were grateful to be spotlighted on the NEA’s blog, as a recipient of an NEA Support for Orgs grant for our 2023 Foster Care Program. You can read the full blog post by clicking the link below!
“Our aim is to bring a rare, vibrant, and much-needed artistic voice to the foster care community at large, including those young people who have recently aged out, and shine a spotlight on the under-recognized needs and aspirations of youth in foster care.”
–Christina Calfo, director of development at The Possibility Project
Based in New York City, The Possibility Project is dedicated to advancing opportunities for youth to engage in artistic expression. On today’s blog, we spoke with Calfo about the Foster Care Performing Arts Program’s upcoming musical theater production and the role of the arts in empowering and positively transforming youth.

Did you get a chance to see “REALIZE” before the new year? ’s 2023 Foster Care Program cast premiered their original musical for change in December, and while it’s true that theater can only be lived once, we certainly think these photos taken by Ahmed Hassan show just how powerful and beautiful REALIZE was.

“At , nobody cares if you sing out loud. In fact, they’ll sing with you.” - Anonymous, 2022-23 Saturday Program Participant
In all of TPP’s youth empowerment programs, our casts of diverse participants create communities built from safety, respect, creativity, and a shared goal of changing the world. Our young people give one another the safety to find their unique voice and together raise their voices into an amplified call for justice and peace, both onstage and off. And as our Saturday participant said above, a spontaneous breakout into song by participants (sometimes with staff!) is not uncommon in TPP rehearsal rooms 😄
This weekend, The Possibility Project’s Saturday Cast received the outline for their original musical! The youth-led Production Team worked tirelessly to develop an outline that best represented their cast’s life experiences and visions for change. The result is the foundation for a powerful piece of theater that this cast will now work together to write and then rehearse over the next three months. Stay tuned for updates on their show’s premiere May 8-11 👀
