What a year it has been! Despite the ups and downs of the world around us, one thing holds steady - the power of audio. We look forward to sharing more amazing audio moments with you in 2023. Until then, stay safe and Happy New Year!
Did you know today is National Broadcast Traffic Professionals Day? Also known as National Traffic Director's Day, this diligent group of people are celebrated every year on November 2nd in commemoration of the first-ever radio broadcast in the U.S., which occurred on November 2, 1920.
Not only does this celebration mark this historic event, it also acknowledges and appreciates the hard work of broadcasting professionals behind the scenes, working diligently on shows, announcements, and our favorite of all, commercials, keeping us entertained and engaged, all day long.
Today, as you're listening to your favorite radio show, make sure you say a special thank you to the ladies and gents that are making it all happen. At AdLarge we're SUPER grateful for our stellar team, and for the fantastic job they do every day!👏👏👏
We know it's late, but it's still Friday somewhere, so we're good to post our good news! We added another member to the AdLarge team!👏👏 Please join us in welcoming Angelina Mendez to our crew!
Angelina is rocking out in the role of Traffic Coordinator, overseeing and coordinating the commercial copy process for our radio partners. In her position, she'll also work with our agency partners on the collection of copy materials, enter traffic instructions, and distribute commercial logs to our partners and stations every week.
Angelina is no stranger to the audio business, having worked for 10 years at another large radio company in traffic. She took a brief hiatus (and even started a small trucking business!), but her love for radio brought her back to the business, and luckily, right to us!
Angelina resides in Southern CA with her husband, 3 children, and a dog. She loves spending quality time with her family and appreciates a good barbecue, soccer, and going to the river or snow, depending on the season. Gym is life, but food & wine are a close second (and sometimes first, but who's judging!).
Help us welcome Angelina by giving her a shout in the comments. 👇 Stay tuned for the next - it may come sooner than you think! See ya!
No, it's not flashback Friday folks - we've added a new member to our team, so it's ! 🥰 Please help us welcome Matt Turck to the AdLarge team!
You may recognize Matt from his days as the co-founder of Megaphone or as the Publisher at Slate, but these days he's taking on the role of Head of Podcast Growth and Strategy. As one of the people to fully embrace podcasting before it's explosive growth, we're super excited about the insights and knowledge Matt will bring to our already amazing team.
Matt resides in beautiful Sun Valley, ID with his wife Anneliese, his 'bad ass' daughter Parker, and his son Easton, aka "Easy E". When he's not working on helping to grow our podcast portfolio, he enjoys most outdoor activities, including skiing, fly fishing, golfing, biking and hiking. He's even dabbled in curling (though admittedly, his team is not so great). He also enjoys a good glass of wine, or a local brew with his wife and friends. He loves animals, which makes Sun Valley such a perfect place for him and his family.
Help us welcome Matt by giving him a shout in the comments. 👇 Our team is in growth mode, so look for more new faces in the coming weeks! See ya soon! 👋
We have another addition to our team, so you know what that means...it's time for another ! Please help us welcome Brian Egan, our new Director, Digital Content & Strategy! 👋
Brian was already a family friend, having worked with us on the podcasting side of our business, providing unique and highly successful content partnerships for our team. In his new role with AdLarge, Brian is looking forward to contributing to the work we provide for our content partners, with an eye toward expanding our footprint in emerging markets, services, and products.
Brian lives in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn with his wife, Katie, and their Maine C**n, Magneto. 😺 When not hard at work hosting his own podcast, Glue Guys, Brian and Katie can usually be found eating out or cooking something to eat with friends in the area. Magneto can be found sleeping inside his shoe box under the bed.😴
Help us welcome Brian by giving him a shout in the comments. 👇 Until next time, enjoy the weekend! 👋

Well, here we are folks - it’s the final week in February, which brings to a close our celebration of African-American pioneers in audio, in honor of Black History Month. Today, we highlight writer and radio producer, Richard Durham.
Born in rural Mississippi in 1917, Durham moved to Chicago with his family at the age of six. He eventually developed a love of writing, finding work in the radio division of the Illinois Writers Project. He wrote for several local shows in the early 1940s and also worked as an editor and journalist for the black-owned Chicago Defender newspaper and Ebony magazine. ✍🏾
After WWII, Durham wrote for a weekly drama on WBBM/Chicago called Democracy USA and created the first soap opera focused on an African-American family, Here Comes Tomorrow, for WJJD/Chicago. He would go on to write and produce the groundbreaking Destination Freedom, a radio drama that featured characters calling for equality a decade before the Civil Rights Movement officially began.
Durham used the weekly Destination Freedom to fight the stereotypes of African-Americans in the media. His inventive scripts highlighted the accomplishments of black leaders throughout history, including Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, and Ida B. Wells. Durham’s recurring theme of social and economic freedom was a revolutionary idea rarely heard on the radio at the time.
Following the demise of Destination Freedom in 1950, Durham worked on a variety of projects, including ghostwriting the 1975 autobiography of Muhammad Ali. Durham was posthumously inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007. 🏆
Thanks for joining us on this journey. We hope you enjoyed our celebration of Black History Month and learned a little something too. 😃
We’re back with another week of celebrating African-American pioneers in audio, in honor of Black History Month. Today, we celebrate Jesse B. Blayton, Sr., who made radio history when he became the first African-American to own and operate a radio station in America. 📻
Born in 1897 in Oklahoma, Blayton studied at the Walton School of Chicago and the University of Chicago, earning Bachelors and graduate degrees, respectively. In 1928, after a successful move to Atlanta, he made history for the first time by becoming Georgia’s first African-American Certified Public Accountant.
After teaching accounting for years at Morehouse College, being founding President of Georgia’s Mutual Federal Savings and Loan Association, and successfully co-founding and co-owning Atlanta’s first Black night club, Blayton purchased 1,000-watt station WERD/Atlanta for $50,000 in 1949. With his son Jesse Blayton Jr. as station manager, WERD became the first radio station owned and programmed by African-Americans in the US.
WERD’s programming was oriented towards African-Americans, pioneering a new program format composed of mostly rhythm and blues music. Other programming included jazz and gospel music, as well as public service programs, educational shows, church services, radio plays, and community news. During the 1960s, the station shared building space with the Southern Christian Leadership Council and provided a platform for civil rights activists to make their voices heard. 🗣
Blayton retired and sold WERD in 1968, but remained an active community leader until his death in 1977. He was posthumously inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995, for making radio history and providing a platform for civil rights activists.
Join us next week for the final week of our Black History Month celebration, and learn a little more about what makes this medium so great.
A day late, but we’re back at it, celebrating African-American pioneers in audio, in honor of Black History Month. Today we’re taking a slight pivot and instead of celebrating a person, we honor a thing, and that’s Memphis radio station WDIA - the first radio station in the US programmed by and for African-Americans.
When it hit the airwaves in 1947, WDIA was one of only six stations broadcasting in Memphis, Tennessee. Owned by John Pepper and Dick Ferguson (who were White), the station was initially programmed to appeal to the white demographic with classical, country-western, and various other musical genres. Lacking initial appeal, WDIA began to play Blues records, in a last ditch effort to stave off closure. Featuring shows and music from the likes of B.B. King (who later attributed his future success to the recognition he received from WDIA) and Bobby “Blue” Bland, the station eventually moved to the #2 spot in the market. A permanent switch to all-Black programming in 1949 quickly moved the station into first place, where it remained for years to come.
Nicknamed “the Mother Station of Negroes” for its ongoing success with reaching the African-American demographic, ownership of the station first changed hands in 1957, and was owned by a series of locals until its final purchase by Clear Channel Communications in 1997. Throughout this period, WDIA continued (and continues) to offer content for African-Americans, by African-Americans.
Join us next week as we continue our Black History Month celebration, and learn a little more about what makes this medium so great.
You know we’re all about audio around these parts, and we love to celebrate it, including the people, places and things that have contributed to making it so great. That’s why every Wednesday in February, in honor of Black History Month, we will be celebrating the African-American pioneers that have contributed to the world of radio. Today, let’s meet Jack Cooper.
Otherwise known as ‘the undisputed patriarch of Black radio in the United States’, Jack was the first African-American radio disc jockey. Born in Tennessee in 1888, Cooper had stints as a successful boxer and semi-pro baseball player ⚾️before landing on the vaudeville circuit as a singer and dancer. His work there led to sketch writing, which eventually led to his foray into radio, writing and performing comedy sketches on Washington DC’s WCAP. He eventually created The All-Negro Hour, which premiered on Chicago’s WSBC in November, 1929.
By 1947, his production company, Jack L. Cooper Presentations controlled about 40 hours per week on four different stations in Chicago. He promoted African-Americans as presenters, and was among the first to broadcast commentaries on Negro league baseball games and news targeted at the black community, as well as actively supporting African-American youth organizations.
Cooper retired from broadcasting in 1959, and passed away at the age of 81 in 1970. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2012. 👏
Join us next week as we continue our Black History Month celebration, and learn a little more about what makes this medium so great.

So...we know you helped us celebrate our final last week, but guess what? We added a new member to the family! We love when we're able to add to the team, so please join us in welcoming Amelia Bailey! 🙂
Amelia joins us in the role of Digital Account Success Manager (our first!), and will work very closely with the sales team and our clients to ensure business objectives are being met, and campaigns are performing as scheduled. She'll accomplish all of this while developing and maintaining collaborative workflows and working relationships both internally and externally. We are super excited to watch her shine in this position, and set the stage for additional ASMs in the future.
A former Marketing Associate, Amelia hails from Potsdam, but now resides in Watertown, NY with her boyfriend, Matt, 👩❤👨 and two feline furbabies, Big Papi and Mosey, aka MoMo. In her free time, she likes to hike and hit the ski slopes in the Adirondacks. She also likes to run, rollerblade, and go for long walks 🚶🏽♀, along with cooking, reading, indulging in reality TV, and scouring local garage sales for antiques (tired yet?).
Okay! We honestly think this is the end of our feature! Thanks for joining us on our journey, and for showing us such love along the way. Stay on the lookout for some more audio facts, info and fun soon!
As they say, all good things must come to an end! While we hope to be adding to the team in the (very!) near future, today marks the last with our current roster. 😥 But enough of the sad face, say hello to the last member of the family, Kirsten Murphy.
Kirsten is a recent graduate of Fordham University (Go Rams!) and joined AdLarge in July as Traffic Coordinator. Her responsibilities include entering weekly copy instructions, editing spots, and distributing commercial materials to our producer partners and thousands of radio stations. 📻
Kirsten lives in Bergen County, New Jersey with her family and teddy bear pup, Ellie. In her spare time, she love to travel with friends🧳,, read, listen to podcasts (Supernatural with Ashley Flowers is a current fave!), visit museums, and play dress-up with her unenthused pup. 👗
So there you have it folks! Don't be a stranger around these parts - stick around for more cool content about the world of audio that we love so much. Until then, stay well, and drop a comment 👇 to say hey! 👋🏽
