While there is always room for improvement, its great to see innovation bloom in the fashion industry.

Here are 5 ways to build a more sustainable closet 👇

Shop B Corp brands: Choose brands that care about the environment, pay fair wages, and are transparent across their entire supply chain. This way you’ll be favoring brands that support people and the planet.

Go to consignment/thrift stores: Explore your local neighborhood (or one you’ve been wanting to check out) and support a small business while you’re at it.

Buy clothes that are high quality & durable: Cheap, low-quality items are designed to be disposable and encourage over-consumption.

Shop less & outfit repeat: Only buy pieces you love: Think about your needs, budget, and personal style so you can invest in sustainable pieces you know you’ll wear a lot because they look good, fit well, and are comfortable.

Value & take care of the clothes you already own: When taking care of your clothes, think about how often you wear it, wash it, the way you storing it, repair it, or up-cycle it. Think of this as the life cycle of your clothes.

Copenhagen Fashion Week has shown significant rise in sustainable protocol during their annual Fashion Week. Unfortunately other cities such as New York have not caught up.

According to copenhagenfashionweek.com, at least 50% of all brands must adhere to at least one the following material requirements:

• Made of certified, preferred materials
• Made of new generation sustainable materials
• Upcycled, recycled or made of deadstock material

As of January 2023 shares ‘We added requirements that are designed to motivate other organizations and brands to become leading in the field of sustainability and to act as inspirational voices parallel to delivering on upcoming legislation.’

Let’s talk about this 🗣️

Fashion Month is famously known as one of the largest events in the fashion industry for many brands.

However, because of the numerous fashion shows, there has been a growing worldwide concern about the high environmental impact that these shows generate year after year.

While some have made progress, New York is followed by Paris with 28%, London with 18%, and Milan with 17%.

Sustainability is nothing new. Many businesses such as B Corp’s have been living eco-consciously for decades. Sustainability is not a trend, it is a choice and it is a necessary one to make. The effects of the fashion industry are not talked about enough, and we want to change that.

Some ways to make New York Fashion Week more sustainable: 

• Keep some elements virtual 
• Embrace innovation and praise brands that are already paving the way for sustainable fashion
• Include mandatory requirements, similar to Copenhagen Fashion Week of preferred recyclable and biodegradable materials that will help decrease harm to the environment

In 1982, American women typically earned 65 cents to each dollar earned by men.

In 2022, American women typically earned 82 cents for each dollar earned by men.

On average, working women lost more than $1.6 trillion in 2022 as a consequence of the gender wage gap.

Here’s how we can fix this:

1️⃣ Increase the minimum wage: Passing the Raise the Wage Act is critical to raising wages for women, particularly Black women and Latinas, given that they are overrepresented in low-wage occupations.

2️⃣ Increase pathways into high-paid occupations: Efforts must be taken to better attract and retain women in high-paid occupations, in which women are underrepresented, including by investing in apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs, which are proven diversification tools.

3️⃣ Invest in the care economy: Passing paid family and medical leave will better help families manage paid work and care responsibilities. These investments would limit the financial penalties women often experience from being disproportionately responsible for caregiving.
