Did you know? An estimated 200,000 NYC students navigate school with undiagnosed dyslexia. This Dyslexia Awareness Month, join us in making a difference. Your support helps us empower students with disabilities every day. 💙

October is Dyslexia Awareness month. NYCCT’s 2023 Production of FISH IN A TREE used stagecraft to highlight how Ally, the main character in the story, navigates school with dyslexia. We, and our audiences, learned a lot about reading-based disabilities through this show. Students from Bridgeprep Academy Charter, a school dedicated to teaching students with read-based disabilities, were so excited to see themselves accurately portrayed on stage.
“Ally was like me. She learned the same way I do with my reading teacher and she was really smart.” - a student from Bridgeprep Academy Charter 🎒

“We made lots of connections between our lives and the book. I loved how we were able to create the song using what we do in class. Using the main idea in the chorus, and using text evidence to write the chorus. I loved how it connected to our curriculum.”

Our Story
New York City Children's Theater programs cultivate children’s growth in the areas of emotional intelligence, community building and responsible decision-making. The result is empathetic, creative and independent thinkers who make a positive impact on their world.
Our mission is to promote children’s literacy and social development through professional theater productions and arts-in-education programs. We reach children and their communities with a wide range of programming, including full-scale productions, small touring shows, interactive workshops and in-school residencies, and engage with them in traditional theater spaces, school auditoriums, classrooms and cultural venues in their neighborhoods.
We demonstrate that engaging young people in the arts has a positive impact on their cognitive, emotional and social development, and furthers a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
NYCCT began in 1996, as Making Books Sing — the family theater and education program of the Tony Award-winning Vineyard Theatre. It became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2001.
