NY Shamrocks Week 4 Report: Tough Weekend for The Shamrocks - The Long Hall Podcast Oct 4, 2021 By Ger Shivnan. It was a tough weekend for the Shamrocks with a number of understrength squads finding themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline. The only bright spot was Rob O'Neill's Reserves winning 4-1 in sunny New Jersey.

Rocks Women and 30s off to winning ways

In the NYMWSL Division A tie Kelci Hegg's Shamrocks Women achieved their first win of the season with a solid 2-0 success over Beyond at East 6th Street on Sunday morning.

Debutants Giuliana LaGumina and Bria Varnbuhler scored the goals that secured all three points for Hegg's women.

"We saw a great performance from Haley Cascone in goal,” said Coach Hegg.

“We were thrilled to see two of our newest Shamrocks get on the score sheet. We look forward to taking this momentum into a challenging game against Fuel FC next week."

In CSL Division 3 East the Over 30s fought to a 1-0 win over a cynical Albanian side. The goal came from Charlie O’Loughlin. Shamrocks wish Calen Carr a full and fast recovery from a serious injury sustained as a result of dangerous play.

In the heavyweight CSL Division One clash on Saturday night, Stuart Colbert's First Team went down to a 2-1 defeat to a well drilled Borgetto FC in an excellent game of football.

The opening exchanges were a typical cagey affair and in the 28th minute, fortunes took a downward turn for the champions when Larry Slaughter was incorrectly deemed to have denied a clear goal scoring opportunity and was duly given a straight red card.

10 minutes into the second half after sustained pressure Borgetto broke the deadlock, a strong run and an excellent finish from an acute angle appeared to be the opening of the floodgates for Borgetto. Two minutes later the Rocks struck back with an excellently placed freekick from Christian Uy headed home by Alejandro Fritz Ruentes.

12 minutes later Borgetto regained the lead. A Shamrocks player was fouled on the edge of the box and resulting from the non-call the Borgetto striker had ample time to pick his spot to curl home the decisive score.

Borgetto themselves were reduced to ten men following a wild lunge from their number 10.

Not the result Colbert would have wanted but certainly a performance he can be pleased with.

Best for his side were James Whyte, Darren Coleman, Joey Aronovsky, Gil Christenberry and keeper Alex Heston.

In CSL Division One Reserves Robbie O'Neill's side dug out a 2-1 victory over Borgetto Reserves.

Amar Davad equalized for Robbie O’Neill’s team and Paul McDaid grabbed the winner.

"Delighted with our win,” said O’Neill.

“It was a fantastic end to end match. All credit to the lads for pulling out the victory.”

Elsewhere, Jeff Farrell was the only scorer in a 4-1 loss for the Legends against Cozmoz in the CSL Over 40s game.

Severely depleted by injuries and late withdrawls, there was further bad news after just five minutes when Joe Connolly had to leave the game due to a collision with an opposing player. The club would like to wish Joe all the very best in his recovery.Up next for the Legends will be undefeated Manhattan Kickers.

The new CSL season opened on September 12th with the Shamrocks beginning to reconstitute as a club after the challenges of a pandemic informed 2020 season. The First and Reserve Teams' title defences began on the first weekend with emphatic 5-1 and 6-0 victories respectively. The Reserves picked up where they left off last season, thumping Beyond FC with an impressive array of goals beginning with an Aaron Ashe free kick that had his stamp of class all over it. Liam O'Connor opened his account for the Rocks in his first start with Darragh Coates, Gil Christenberry and Joe Connolly completing the rout.

In the Firsts' game, new manager Stuart Colbert saw his men brush aside the challenge of Beyond FC with two goals from Christian Uy along with strikes from Alejandro Fritz Ruentes, Owen Bradley and a Darren Coleman penalty. Coleman and James Whyte anchored the midfield well and controlled the tempo, providing the platform for the win.

Colbert expressed satisfaction with the performance, citing the amount of new faces to incorporate. 'It was a great first game and an important result but they’ll be stronger tests to follow and we need to build on this result moving forward. Competition for places will be fierce with impending returns from injury and players returning from travels.'

Best players for Shamrocks were Nick Zorbo, Alejandro Fritz Ruentes and Owen Bradley.

The Legends came back to CSL football from a season long sojourn in the Long Island Soccer League where league new boys Ridgewood Romac handed them a 2-1 loss. A spirited second half was not good enough to get a share of the spoils. The goal came courtesy of the ageless pairing of Bingo O'Driscoll and Jerome Albertini, the former with a pin-point cross which the latter volleyed home with aplomb. Despite the result, coach John Riordan was confident that a decent platform for the season had been established.

The club and especially his teammates want to wish Peter Anastasian all the best in his recovery from a serious injury he sustained in the game.

In this past weekend's action, Stuart Colbert's depleted first team suffered a 1-0 reverse in the semi-final of the Rapaglia Cup. Although a disappointing result, thoughts have turned immediately to next weekend's huge clash with Borgetto FC. Shamrocks had a good look at Borgetto's high octane brand of football in the league cup semi final last season so they will be under no illusion at the size of the task in hand.

Rob O'Neill's Reserves were badly off the pace, suffering a 4-0 loss at the hands of Zum Schneider reserves. O'Neill knows a big improvement will be required from his men in next weekend's game.

In their second game of the season, Riordan's Legends got points on the board with a comfortable 3-0 win over CPR Orange on a sunny Randall's Island. Two goals from captain Ger Shivnan and another from Johnny Keogh coupled with a very solid defensive performance saw the Legends claim all three points.

This weekend saw the Shamrocks Women return to action. An understrength squad had a tough battle in the Lower East Side but coach Kelci Hegg is confident that new signings will turn the team around and they will almost certainly be a force to be reckoned with moving forward. Next up for the Women is Beyond FC.

NY Shamrocks SC 2020/21 Division One Champions

Champagne cooled the baked turf of Field 74 on Sunday night as Paddy Geraghty's men finally reached the summit of the CSL Division One. A resounding 5-0 win against a severely depleted Greek Americans was the culmination of a brilliant, unbeaten season where composed defense was married to electric attacking football. Paddy Geraghty has now overseen Division One championship wins in both Ladies and Men's for Shamrocks; a unique feat in a season that was itself, unique to say the very least.

The campaign began on a sunny Sunday on Roosevelt Island with mandatory facemasks, temperature checks and a palpable sense of relief that the club was getting to play football. Uncertainty abounded. Would the authorities allow sport to continue? Would we ever have a complete league season? To the eternal credit of Paddy Geraghty and indeed all the other coaches involved they blocked out the uncertainty and focused their team's thoughts on the things they could control, winning games. And win they did. The first half of the season saw the Firsts score 35 goals and concede only 9; three of those coming in a thrilling 4-3 win over arch rivals Manhattan Celtic in what proved to be the most decisive 3 points of the season.

The second half of the season started in similar fashion with thumping wins over Greek Americans, Richmond, Polonia. The reverse fixture against Manhattan Celtic proved to be another barnstormer. A 2-2 draw kept Shamrocks' nose in front and proved to be a body blow to Celtic's title ambitions. There was to be one further small turn in the race to keep things interesting, a last minute equalizer from Zum Schneider meant that the title race was going down to the last day.

A scorching Sunday evening was the scene for the finale. Celtic kicked off two fields across knowing only a win from them and anything less that three points from Shamrocks would see them crowned champions. It was not to be. Shamrocks tore into Greek Americans controlling every aspect of the game and quick fire goals from Buitrago and Cameron proved to be the all that was needed to end the tie as a contest. Shamrocks coasted to 5-0 win and then the celebrations began in earnest.

Rob O'Neill's Reserves whose facile final game was called off were there to receive their trophy and provide full-throated support for their clubmates as they have done all season.

Reserve captain Joey Flynn was the first to receive the trophy to uproarious delight from a talented and close knit squad.

Next up was talismanic midfielder and captain Darren Coleman, whose metronomic passing set the tone for the team, became the first Shamrocks captain to raise the CSL Division One title.

It was a moment that many, have contributed to, not just this year, but down through the years. Some are still in the club, some have moved away for warmer or indeed cooler climates and some of our dear friends and teammates are no longer with us. Their memories were kept alive by Sunday night's victories and for many there those people were close in their thoughts.

In a 12 months that saw us lose so much this was a moment to savor. The glint of floodlights off those trophies might just have been the light at the end of a dark tunnel.

Champions - The Reserves Clinch Title in Emphatic Fashion

In a season unlike any other Rob O'Neill's Reserves claimed the Division 1 Reserves title with a thumping 6-0 win over Manhattan Kickers reserves on a balmy Saturday evening on Randall's Island. It is a fully deserved title for a team whose firepower proved too much for almost all opposition. The team has racked up to date an impressive 93 goals over 21 games.

O'Neill's team can play the final game of the season against the Greek's knowing that the hard work from the past season has been done.

The Reserves got about their task with typical attacking efficiency with Joe Connolly opening the scoring after five minutes of play. A second followed soon after from Mickey McGreevy and the destination of the title was settled soon after with Ben Jordan and Joey Flynn making it 4-0 at half time.

Not content with resting on their laurels the score board was kept active with a smashing 25 yard volley from Ronan Harvey and Joe Connolly closing out the evening with with his second and his side’s sixth.

It was a score line that befitted a team whose championship winning season was defined by intense, exciting, attacking football with goals coming from virtually every sector of the team.

In the late game Paddy Geraghty’s men continued their March towards the title with a solid 2-0 win over a Manhattan Kickers team that have been very much improved in recent weeks. Rafa Carvalho and Charlie O’Loughlin were the men on target to keep Shamrocks at the summit of the table.

It was a controlled performance, one that Shamrocks never looked like losing. Best for the Rocks were Charlie O'Loughlin at the back, Cesar Buitrago and Darren Coleman in midfield.

A greatly understrength Legends battled hard to secure a 0-0 draw against NYPE in their first game of the round robin series of the LISFL League Cup. Missing Their starting central midfield, central defense and striker the John Riordan's men put in a solid performance in warm conditions to put their chance of a semi final berth firmly in their own hands.

Shamrock Ladies came out on the right side of a tough assignment against Queens FC on Sunday. Playing in the heat of the day with a battered back line, the offense was able to pull through with solid goal scoring. After Queens scored a goal in the 8th minute, the Shamrock ladies maintained possession for the rest of the half. Goals in the first half by Chloe Wheeler and Mikaela Howell put the team up 2-1 at half. Coming out strong in the 2nd half, Julia McGuire hit a left footed scorcher from 35 yards out into the top left corner. As the game proceeded, Queens scored 2 more goals to tie it up with 6 minutes to go. Mikaela Howell took it upon herself to have the final say in the game. A slaloming run at the heart of the Wueens defense saw her take on several players before drilling into the side netting on a ball 15 yards out. The defense, anchored largely in part by Emily Gray and Vanessa Franky, held on for the win in the final 2 minutes of the game.

In the first of the games in Frank Principe Park Rob O’Neill’s Reserves took a giant step towards a long awaited title with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Zum Schneider. The Reserves flew out of the box racing into a 3-0 lead by half time. Two goals from Aaron Ashe including an audacious 35 yard chip over a stranded Zum Keeper was the pick of the bunch. Joe Connolly hit the third and the scoring was rounded out by Ben Jordan.

A delighted Rob O’Neill said that we was “Looking to seal the league title 6pm Saturday night against Manhattan Kickers on Randalls Island.”

In the first team game Paddy Geraghty’s side had to be content with a tight tough 2-2 draw against Zum Schneider. Goals from Joey Aronovsky and top scorer Kurt Cameron accounted for the Rocks scoring.

In the aftermath Coach Paddy Geraghty said. - “We got the tough game we expected from Zum Schneider this week. They deserve a lot of credit for their efforts and we’ll hopefully learn some lessons from the game too. We have another tough game on Saturday night against a resurgent Manhattan Kickers side that are fighting against relegation. We’ll need to be at our best to get a result.” Kick off in that tie is 8pm.

Shamrocks Firsts Stay Top After Enthralling Encounter

Paddy Geraghty's men came away with a point after and intriguing encounter with top of the table rivals Manhattan Celtic. It was a tight, fast-paced affair with the momentum swinging like a pendulum as both teams tried to assert themselves. Celtic attacked several times down their right wing leading to a few decent chances and a yellow card for Charlie O'Loughlin after 12 minutes that was to prove crucial later on.

Manhattan Celtic dominated the opening twenty minutes creating several chances by pressuring and harrying the Shamrocks midfield. It was against a backdrop of Manhattan Celtic pressure, however that Shamrocks took the lead.

A ball into the box was not dealt with by the Celtic defense and careened off the back post where the rebound was met by the on-rushing Cesar Buitrago who made no mistake in crashing the ball home. Unfortunately the shift in momentum and the lead were not to last.

Celtic won a freekick in a dangerous area outside of the box and an excellently flighted ball was placed right into the danger zone where it clipped off the head of James Whyte and into the net. The result held until the half time break.

Shamrocks emerged from the break reinvigorated. In midfield they were brighter and snapped into tackles with intent and purpose. If the first half belonged to Celtic the second half belonged to shamrocks. The full backs began to assert their dominance and aided and abetted the busy Carvhalo and Coleman who gave Celtic's midfielders no time on the ball and began to build a stable attacking platform for the Rocks.

This was a quality top of the table encounter with both sides well matched. The introduction of the versatile Kurt Cameron in an attacking midfield role began to have a positive effect. He was at the center of all the good Shamrocks moves, picking out teammates with incisive passing and driving at the Celtic defense with purpose. This pressure eventually told when Shamrocks won a free kick 25 yards from goal and following some confusion in the Celtic defense the ball landed at the reliable foot of Joey Aronovsky who smashed home to send his team 2-1 to the good.

With 12 minutes remaining Shamrocks began to retreat for the inevitable last stand. Celtic probed down both wings and had several half chances. The pressure eventually told with a quality strike coming off the post and Shamrocks defenders unable to clear the lines the ball was lashed home to tie the game. A point would suffice for Shamrocks so the onus was on Celtic to break the tie. Wave after wave of pressure was dealt with ably by the defense but this job was made harder by a reckless shove from Charlie O'Loughlin seeing him head for the line from the resultant second yellow card. It was not an ideal scenario for the Rocks but Kurt Cameron sat back as an auxiliary center half and used his aerial prowess to help get the Rocks over the line. The final score was 2-2 in a great advertisement for the game in the City.

Afterwards Coach Paddy Geraghty said “This was one of the toughest games I’ve been involved in. Both teams showed how much they wanted to win the league and a draw was a fair result on the night. We are disappointed not to hold to a lead with 10 mins left but the result keeps our chances in our own hands with five games left. Manhattan Celtic are a quality side led by a fantastic coach and we’ll need to keep winning as they’ll likely do the same.”

In the opening game Robbie O'Neill's Reserves emerged as 2-1 winners in a closely fought contest. A penalty from Joe Flynn and a GIl Christenberry goal either side of the halftime break saw shamrocks take control of a high octane game where both teams gave committed accounts of themselves.

With fifteen minutes remaining Manhattan Celtic pulled a goal back and the defense of the Rocks had to be in top form to preserve the win. The three points are exactly as is required with their top of the table clash against Hoboken coming up next Sunday.

In the early Sunday game the Legends set up a winner-takes all game with Baldwin FC for a place in the LISFL 0.40s final next week with a routine victory over a severely depleted Oceanside FC. It was a game that saw the return of a number of players to the Shamrocks colors with one, Aidan Fogarty getting on the scoresheet in the opening minutes. Goals from Bingo Driscoll, Johnny Keogh (2), Andy Loftus and James Moore saw the result put beyond any doubt.

Coach John Riordan shared his thoughts afterwards - “It was a great squad performance. We were missing some key players and it was hugely positive to see others step in.

“We got the early lead and we were comfortable from there. Everyone played their part. Great to see Eddie Gilmartin back from a long injury lay-off. It was worrying to see him chopped down by his own shadow in their box and the referee unfortunately didn’t really know what to do. Thankfully he emerged unscathed except for a bruised ego.

“I’m happy with the win but the focus moves very quickly to Baldwin next Sunday morning. There are a few playoff permutations but quite simply nothing less than a win is the target.”

The Ladies recorded their second large win in a row with an 11-1 victory, playing a short-sided South Bronx United side. Coach Kelci Hegg said "we definitely capitalized on all our chances. Sara Plowman led the way with a hat trick and a steady performance from the midfield kept things to a minimum" THe ladies were not without their own personnel issues. Shorn of their regular keeper and a number of key defenders, Hegg was forced to play a different formation but despite the changes the team were unfazed and in truth the result bore that out.

The Shamrocks biggest game of the season is just two days away. We take on Manhattan Celtic on Sunday evening at 8pm on Randalls Island, Field 74. The Reserves are in action first at 6pm. Please come out to support the lads.

Perfect Weekend for the Rocks

The Shamrocks recorded four wins from four over the weekend with the three men's teams consolidating their title credentials and the Ladies recording their first win of the season following a two nil reversal the week before.

The Women recorded a thumping 11-0 win over Kickers in the opening game of the weekend with the goals from the combination of several returning stalwarts along with key new faces. The chances came thick and fast seeing hat-tricks from Sara Plowman, Chloe Wheeler and Emily Gray platform the victory. Teresa Ferraro-Gosse, who returned after having baby Zoe this past summer, marked the occasion with a goal. Another veteran, Mikaela Howell, also marked her return from her stint with professional side Sky Blue FC with a goal.

In next game of the weekend the Legends beat table toppers Lindenhurst 3-2 in a tightly contested game in Frank Principe Park. Well taken, second half goals from Johnny Keogh and Brendan Donoghue saw the Rocks take a two nil lead but a well drilled Lindenhurst, fresh from coming from two behind last weekend pegged the legends back.

It seemed destined to head for a draw until the 82nd minute when Ger Shivnan was taken down in the box. His subsequent spot kick proved to be the decisive score with a solid defensive finale seeing the Rocks take all three points and leave their play-off ambitions in their own hands.

Best of the Legends were Stephen Doyle at Center Back, Johnny Keogh and John Riordan in midfield and good shifts from Ducky Kelly and Niall Corbett in the fullback positions.

Speaking after the game, coach John Riordan said "We showed great resolve to keep fighting and chase that winner.

"It was disappointing that we couldn't finish the game off at 2-0 up when we had the chances to do so but to be fair to Lindenhurst, they never gave up. So it was a relief to get the three points and stay in with a shout at the play-offs.

"Oceanside next week will be vital and the objective is simple, win every upcoming game."

In the first of the two evening games The Reserves exacted a measure of revenge on Kelmendi FC with a decisive 4-2 score line in a game packed with incident. Shamrocks took the lead but allowed Kelmendi to equalize and then take the lead with two balls over the top of a static defense.

This woke the Reserves up and by half time they were 4-2 ahead courtesy of Mickey McGreevy completing a hat-trick and Finn O'Reilly's unorthodox finish.

The second half was played with considerable intensity with tempers on a hair trigger. It boiled over when a Kelmendi defender punched the returning Aaron Ashe. Shamrocks composed themselves and got about the business of closing the game out but an ill-disciplined Kelmendi, having not learned the lesson of being down to 10 men, continued to spoil for a fight necessitating the referee to abandon the game early with the result standing as per the league's website

In the second evening game the Firsts maintained their impressive run of form with a 2-1 win over a Kelmendi team who have proven to be difficult opposition for many teams over the course of the season.

The Firsts took a two goal lead through Nikita Zhurulev and Rafa Carvalho but failed to extend the advantage. In the second half Kelmendi pulled one back setting the stage for a battling performance from the Firsts to preserve the lead and take all three points.

Coach Paddy Geraghty spoke about it being a nervy performance. "We took our foot off the gas, gave away a soft goal at the start of the second half which changed the game, and we had to dig in and battle for the win." Best performers for the Firsts were Darren Coleman, Cesar Buitrago, Eli Voshva, and James Whyte. Kieran McGovern again stood tall making some vital saves.

Next up for the Firsts will be the biggest game of the season so far; a top of the table meeting with Manhattan Celtic. Kick off at 8:00pm on Field 74, Sunday April 25. The reserves precede this with a 6:00pm kick off.

Firsts and Reserves Top The Table
Legends Share the Points

Paddy Geraghty's Firsts recorded a solid 4-0 win over Polonia on Saturday in a shadowy Randall's Island. The game started with bright attacks from both sides where alert defending from Souleymane Bah, debutant Finn O'Reilly at center back and another accomplished shift from keeper Kieran McGovern kept the game scoreless. Building on this Geraghty's men began to dominate with Chris Uy and Rafael Carvelho building solid attacking platforms and creating chances. Darren Coleman in the center dictated the play from the pivot spraying the ball with authority and bringing his team-mates into play. Accurate long balls from James Whyte who was dominant from left back began to stretch Polonia and it was the pin-point long passing that began to wear the opposition down.

The pressure eventually told when another of Uy's crosses was met by the head of Kurt Cameron who directed a smart header beyond the reach of the Polonia keeper. It was the break the Rocks needed and deserved. The second arrived soon after when the very productive Rafael Carvalho slid a perfectly timed through ball into Cameron's feet who finished well.

The second half began with Polonia exerting pressure on Shamrocks and getting the better of the half's early exchanges. The changes Geraghty had made throughout the game began to tell as the fresher legs of Shamrocks began to reassert dominance. The third goal arrived from another Chris Uy cross which was dispatched without fuss by Usman Ibine Ayo. This killed the game as a contest and the 'Rocks were able to knock the ball around with a greater freedom. The fourth arrived from Uy, who deservedly got on the scoresheet with a well taken individual effort that may have involved more than one stepover.

The result leaves the First top of the table one point clear of Manhattan Celtic.

Gaffer Robbie O'Neill's Reserves came from behind to record a 2-1 win over Polonia in the opening game. This result coupled with Hoboken drawing with Zum Schneider sees O'Neill's team top the table just at the right time of the season. The opening game of the evening saw a surprisingly strong Polonia side stand toe to toe with the Reserves for the first 45 minutes in a close encounter. A Polonia defense who, up until this game had shipped over 50 goals gave a resolute account of themselves keeping the Shamrocks' attack at bay. In fact it was the new look Polonia that took the lead in the 55th minute and held firm despite considerable pressure until the 75th minute when Ronan Harvey slotted home the equalizer following good work to cut-in off the wing to fashion the chance. The goal gave fresh impetus to Shamrocks who attacked with verve and purpose to find a winner. That came in the 85th minute from the boot of newly minted goal threat Rob Gaynor who won the game with a fine, angled strike from 14 yards beyond the Polonia keeper.

The Legends, after a four week hiatus kicked off against a strong NYPD side in Frank Principe Park. Early exchanges saw the Legends dominate the game and create some decent chances but they failed to convert. As the half wore on, NYPD came back into the game and began to threaten. Stevie Doyle and Bingo Driscoll marshalled the defence expertly and provided a solid platform to maintain the clean sheet. Half time arrived with the game scoreless with both sides feeling like they would find the winner. Legends switched to a 4-5-1 formation to close a few gaps against the NYPD's midfield 3 and the tie remained balanced but NYPD began to exert some pressure. It eventually paid off when a speculative shot skidded off a very wet surface and the bounce deceived Myer in goals. It was an unlucky break for a defense that had been very solid up to that. The goal lifted NYPD and their attack began to dominate. Their second arrived not long after when a Legends' attack broke down and the ball was shuttled quickly towards the Legends' goal where a smart through ball was finished well by the NYPD's forward.

After this setback the Legends began to grow in stature. The defense and midfield began to raise the intensity, snapping into tackles and disrupting the passing flow of the NYPD. This pressure eventually told when an excellent diagonal through ball from left back Niall Corbett found the feet of Ger Shivnan who took the ball inside two NYPD defenders and smashed it into the net. The goal stirred the Legends into greater urgency. They attacked the NYPD in waves and had several chances to tie when eventually a long ball into Shivnan found it's way across to Jerome Albertini who picked his spot and sent a perfectly arced, unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards out. Shamrocks pressed hard for a winner creating a few more chances but they had to settle for a draw. Best for the Rocks were John Riordan in midfield, Stevie Doyle at center back and ably abetted by James Moore on the wing, Tolga Yilmaz in the middle and the ageless Bingo Driscoll who played both attack and defense.
