TIME BRIEFLY STOPS AT EMILY DURING A FRIDAY NIGHT CELEBRATION DINNER
His face is greasy with after-bedtime exhilaration,
bright eyes and small hands reach for another slice, leaving fingerprints
on the table he rests his elbows on.
His mother, laughing, sways to the orange swirl of 80’s music overhead,
she has ordered more than she will eat but she does not know it yet,
her back is to a window and on the warm street outside her shadow leaves its imprint.
Part of the table is hidden by a papery handful of white; his sister
pauses to chew before diving back into creating her world of color, her crayons tattoo the pages that will soon adorn the walls by their table and stay until new ones are made.
In the back of the restaurant he notices the glow of the pizza oven,
mango light shines softly on the white aprons of chatting chefs while they roll fresh dough,
he can just make out bottles of tomato sauce and amber honey waiting on wooden shelves.
