55 Years After Stonewall, Police Reform Stalls at Symbolic Gestures | ACLU 07/18/2024

While police departments might voice support for our community, officers continue to target sexual and gender minorities.

Our new report exposes this dichotomy, showing that LGBTQ individuals report more adverse treatment by police. We will continue to fight these abuses and advocate for reform.

55 Years After Stonewall, Police Reform Stalls at Symbolic Gestures | ACLU The ACLU’s latest report shows how, despite efforts to show solidarity with the LGBTQ community, police harassment, violence and discrimination continues to target sexual and gender minorities.

Helen Keller was a political activist, author, educator, and disability rights advocate. She graduated from Radcliffe College of Harvard University, becoming the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. Keller was a prolific author who wrote and published 14 books and hundreds of speeches and essays on a range of topics, including writings on her blindness. Her writings informed the public about disabilities and fought the stigma surrounding them.

In 1917, Keller was one of many opponents of America’s entry into World War I who risked prosecution, censorship, and violence by publicly declaring her dissent. Three years later, Keller would be part of the small committee within an anti-war organization that would evolve into the American Civil Liberties Union. With the creation of the ACLU, Keller and her fellow founders dedicated themselves to holding the government to the promises made in the Bill of Rights.

The story of Keller’s life is often romanticized and stigmatized as the story of a person who “triumphs over” their disability, but her political work and her dedication to various fights for social justice are what should be remembered and celebrated. She was a staunch activist and educator until her death in 1968. We are honored to have Helen Keller as one of our co-founders and to share her story this Disability Pride Month.

The Real Targets of Project 2025’s War on P**n 07/13/2024

The architects of Project 2025 claim they want to protect children.

Their actual goal is to censor the public lives of q***r and trans people.

Carolyn McCaskill has been a counselor and professor in the ASL and Deaf Studies Department since 1996 at Gallaudet University, the only university in the world in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students.

As a Black Deaf woman, Dr. McCaskill has dedicated much of her work to the study and teachings of Black American Sign Language. Black ASL is a dialect of American Sign Language that was largely brought about by school segregation in the South and is most commonly used today by Deaf African Americans. Because schools for the deaf were, like other schools at the time, segregated, sign language among Black Americans developed differently than among white signers. Today, the work of scholars like Dr. McCaskill help preserve and advance the cultural history and impact of BASL.

We celebrate Dr. McCaskill, BASL, and Black signers this Disability Pride Month.

How Donald Trump's Election Lies and Other Anti-Voter Policies Will Continue to Impact Our Democracy | ACLU 07/12/2024

How Trump's Proposed Radical Expansion of Executive Power Will Impact Our Freedoms | ACLU 07/12/2024

During his administration, Trump and his allies abused their power to silence protesters, punish political enemies, and clamp down on a free press. Between the plans laid out in Project 2025 and Trump’s campaign promises, a potential second term could be an unprecedented expansion of executive power.

Our latest memo lays out our roadmap to challenging any attempt to expand executive power in the courts, in Congress, and in statehouses.

Stevie Wonder is one of the most successful musicians in the world. A child prodigy, he topped the music charts at just 13 years old with his song “Fingertips." Since then, his career as a performer has had a major, foundational influence over R&B music and artistry.

On top of his illustrious musical career, Wonder is dedicated to civil rights and anti-apartheid activism alongside his efforts raising funds and awareness for children with disabilities. He spoke before the United Nations advocating for the Marrakesh Treaty, which would provide books and other academic materials in a more accessible format to people who are blind, visually impaired, or have print disabilities. Through establishing the Wonder Vision Awards Program, he has invested in advances in technology that will serve those who are blind or visually impaired.

We’re celebrating Wonder’s work, music, and story this Disability Pride Month.

ACLU prepares to fight Trump's planned DEI purge 07/08/2024

Since our nation’s founding, the fabric of American society has been woven with deeply racist policies that directly harm Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. These policies have led to an unequal system where marginalized communities have been systematically locked out of opportunities in jobs, education, and housing, and other essential resources.

It's time to root out the systemic racial inequalities that still persist today.
