What is the difference between “regular” Swedish massages and prenatal massages?

One of the primary differences between Swedish and Prenatal Massage is the positioning of the client on the table. We position our pregnant clients either facedown utilizing specially designed pregnancy cushions that fully support a pregnant person’s belly or position them in a side-lying position also fully supported with pillows.

Certified prenatal massage therapists have extensive training in the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth and are trained in exactly how to expertly apply safe massage techniques to support their clients. In early pregnancy there are specific pressure points to be avoided and certified prenatal therapists know exactly where they are. Swedish massage focuses primarily on general stress relief and muscle tension with fewer positioning restrictions. Swedish massage is the foundation for most therapists and those specializing in prenatal massage seek continuing education and hands-on training in order to qualify to work with this special population.

Our highly specialized Labor Enhancement Massage & Movement Session utilizes Body Ready Method® evidence-based movements and targeted massage techniques to help prepare your body for labor!

It is only offered to those who are 38 weeks and beyond as, in some cases, it can help to cause the onset of labor.

There is both a bodywork portion and a movement portion of this session to help both prepare your body for birth and to encourage your baby into a favorable birthing position within your womb.

At the end of the session, you will receive an instructional handout detailing the labor pressure points and labor specific movements. This guide can be used by your partner or doula leading up to and throughout your labor process.

Please note that due to safety precautions, we are unable to schedule this session if you have any signs of high-risk complications such as pre-eclampsia, bleeding or high blood pressure.

Pregnancy and postpartum bring about significant changes in a birthing person's body. Fluid retention and hormonal shifts often lead to swelling (edema), particularly in the legs, feet, and hands. While common, edema can be uncomfortable and even impact mobility.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle massage technique designed to help alleviate these issues. By stimulating the lymphatic system, it encourages the body to naturally flush out excess fluid, reducing swelling and associated discomfort.

Question: Can you receive a postpartum massage if you have had a c-section?

Answer: Abdominal massage is not recommended for at least 6 weeks after cesarean delivery, however, you may be massaged in other places of your body and still receive the benefits of a massage. Recovery from a c-section can vary for each individual so if you are unsure about whether you are ready to have a postpartum massage, speak to your doctor and they can help to assess whether or not you are ready.
