Each year during Retinoblastoma Awareness Week, Aravind pays tribute to our courageous patients and our dedicated medical staff. Thank you to all the contributors to our Ring of Hope program, which supports research and treatment of retinoblastoma and other eye cancers.

113th Vision Centre will be opened at Thalaivasal on 5th April 2024.
The centre will be managed by Aravind-Salem.

Vision is a priceless gift that allows us to enjoy the spectacular beauty around us. Unfortunately, due to some eye conditions, some of our fellow humans cannot experience the same. One of the severe vision problems is “Low vision,” which can't be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or other standard treatments like medicine or surgery. Everyday activities like driving, reading, writing, watching television, recognising faces, crossing the street, or cooking become challenging for persons with low vision. It can develop at any age. People with low vision may not be completely blind. Those affected must learn to make the best use of their remaining sight and maintain their independence. However, the good news is that there are low vision devices and vision rehabilitation services that could help them compensate for vision loss and continue doing the things they love.

Technologically advanced devices such as screen readers, magnifiers, voice-activated devices, etc., give a beacon of hope, offering them various new possibilities for education, employment, and social interaction, thereby easing their lives.

Amidst the challenges, support from family and friends is essential for those with low vision to lead an active and happy life. A positive attitude, coupled with trial and error, along with rehabilitation, can help them be self-sufficient. It is crucial to recognise the resilience and strength exhibited by individuals with low vision. Many have achieved remarkable success in various fields, proving that with determination and support, one can overcome any obstacle. By witnessing such stories of triumph, we can encourage ourselves and others to persevere with their eyesight and not underestimate the capabilities of those with visual impairments.

Awareness is an important and powerful tool to dispel misconceptions, myths or social evils that are still practiced. By observing awareness days, people become more aware of serious diseases, engage in open conversations within communities, schools, and workplaces, and understand the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments.

During this Low Vision awareness month, it is crucial to share information about the challenges faced by low vision patients as well as the innovations that enable them to adopt and enhance their quality of lives.

So pleased for our amazing Mid-level Ophthalmic employees -- 85% of our workforce are women. They are truly the Backbone of Aravind!

The Board of Management of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight-India is honoured and delighted to award the prestigious Guru Dronacharya Award 2023 to Shri RD Thulasiraj, on the special occasion of World Sight Day. This prestigious award introduced in year 2023 is bestowed on individuals to honour excellence in the field of community eye care in the form of mentoring eye care institutions on a sustained basis covering a comprehensive set of systems, for several years.*

• Get your vision checked to prevent accidents
• Ask your employer to host company-wide vision screenings
• Wear corrective lenses to be more productive at work
• Treat eye injuries immediately to prevent serious loss of sight
• Donate to the Aravind Eye Foundation and provide free
treatment to our patients with ocular trauma -- $115 covers
surgery, medicines, and transportation for patient and family.
