The Gama brothers, who lead the band Son Rompe Pera, have updated the Mexican marimba tradition and seem to have singlehandedly brought it into the 22d century. Heirs to a craft that goes back a few generations, they were first taught by their father with whom they played on the street for years. After a few detours through punk and rockabilly, they have updated their sound, and now play mostly cumbia and throw what are possibly the best parties in Mexico City.
Their first US appearance was at Barbès in the Woods two years ago, they have since toured the world over, bringing the same kind of frenzy to Coachella or Barbès.
They will close the festival on Sunday nov 24 - and rumor has it they may play a DJ set the night before.

Los Gaiteros De San Jacinto are back - this coming Monday.
The Grammy-winning group is is one of the first gaita bands to gain national popularity in Colombia back in 1950’s. Their music has had a profound impact on the development of Colombian cumbia. Their mixture of village roots music and dance-oriented grooves has allowed them to perform in a multitude of contexts - from village fiestas to Mexico Olympics, rock clubs, major international festivals.
And Barbès.
It's been my great pleasure to present them over the years (first at Moma, possibly 15 years ago?) and each time performance becomes a transcending experience and a lesson in the power of music, community and the re-invention of tradition.

I can honestly say that their Barbès shows may be one of the reason we stay in business.
