There’s something new to read on our website! A CITY COACH HOUSE, where John talks about designing his NYC apartment, and explains the importance of a tabletop vignette.
In designing the guest room, I intentionally left the linen-upholstered walls largely unadorned to give the room a sense of serenity, so that it could become an oasis for the urban traveler. JS

There were too many beautiful photos of the gardens John designed for his Villa to include in the earlier stories. So, we thought it be fun to share more! You can tour John’s gardens, while he explains the process behind the designs, in his book VILLA . . . available through our website.
Winter is almost behind us, but we can’t stop thinking about the beauty of this Montana Lodge, rakishly designed by , with a wall of red wool and our Harley Chairs dressed in leather.
What an ideal setting for our Shoelace Ottoman . . . decked out in Holland & Sherry fabric and masterfully styled by Alexandria Elam!
Built by expert Italian craftsmen in the 17th-century, this carved chest of drawers made its way through generations of families, until finding its place in the Primavera bedroom of John’s personal Villa project in Santa Barbara. Pictured here, in his book that takes readers through the 7-year reincarnation of the dilapidated estate, this gorgeously carved piece sits below a hanging of Fortuny fabric and centered between a Louis Xlll and Charles ll chair. This treasured example of Italian artistry remained in John’s personal collection after leaving the Villa, and is now available to purchase through our showroom! Please visit the Antiques & Acquisitions page of our website for more information and photos.
By the nature of the materials required in a bathroom, they’re angular and hard. The trick is to scour the inherent harshness into a surrounding that is more welcoming, using curved lines, evocative colors, and sneaking in fabrics wherever possible.

The dream before the dreams! Go ahead and pinch yourself, the beauty of our Sleigh Bed will still be there.
“I love enigmas that force the viewer to rethink the boundaries of the real world. The use of wall paintings to bring the garden indoors has a long and distinguished history. I am very fond of this kind of ambiguity. In art, unlike life, celebrating an untruth can have great merits.” JS

It’s always exciting to see what comes up with when they style our furniture! Here’s their “peachy”rendition of our Audrey Sofa.
Our Villa Summer Read Sale is still going on! Follow along on this 7 year project, as John shares all the grit and glamour behind the resurrection of his Montecito Villa.
"Transforming the half-ruined property into the magnificent villa that existed in my head was a daunting, demanding, exhausting experience. It involved, simultaneously, new construction, reconstruction and restoration, interior design, and landscape design. It was like trying to keep control of a fast-moving, three-dimensional chess game." JS

Outdoor spaces are often overlooked and underutilized. Most people feel overwhelmed with the thought of trying to manipulate nature. But, the easiest thing to do is to start simply. Pick an intimate area, using a piece of furniture, tree, or view as a focal point, and plan around it. Choose plants that will thrive in your climate, edit out unnecessary or impeding elements, and add statements (stone, metal, wood) that echo the "voice" of their surroundings.
Now, all you need to do is simply . . . start!
Our Sale Pieces page is full of new additions, with some discounted over 50% off retail! We'd be happy to virtually show you any piece you're interested in via Facetime or Zoom. SImply give us a call to set up a visit.
