In the immediate aftermath of October 7, in remembrance of the massacre at the Nova Music Festival, our siblings in Israel bravely coined a phrase that has echoed in our hearts ever since: “We will dance again.”

This year, as we roll the Torah back to Beresh*t (Genesis) and start our cycle anew, let us also renew our commitment to each other and to our faith. Let us hold fast to the belief that better days are ahead, that peace will prevail, and that we will, once again, dance together in celebration.

I encourage you to make “We Will Dance Again” the theme of your personal Simhat Torah observance.

Yom Kippur is a holiday marked by introspection, repentance, and prayer. It offers individuals a unique opportunity to reflect on their mental well-being.

What can you do this Yom Kippur to strengthen your mental health?

Self-Reflection and Introspection: The core of Yom Kippur is self-reflection. This process involves examining one's thoughts, feelings, and actions over the past year. Introspection can be therapeutic, allowing you to identify areas where you may need to improve your mental health.

Repentance and Forgiveness: Yom Kippur is a day of repentance, when we seek forgiveness for our sins and mistakes. Try to forgive yourself when you are struggling. Remember, it’s okay not to be okay. Forgiveness can be freeing, helping us release feelings of guilt and shame that can negatively impact mental health.
Stress Reduction: Fasting and prayer can help reduce stress and anxiety. They can also provide a sense of calm and focus, allowing you to gain perspective on your challenges.

Community and Support: Yom Kippur is celebrated as a community, providing us with a sense of belonging and support. This can be particularly beneficial for anyone struggling with mental health issues, as it can help them feel less isolated and connected to others.

Spiritual Renewal: For many people, Yom Kippur offers an opportunity for spiritual renewal. This can be a powerful way to cope with mental health challenges, as it can provide a sense of hope and purpose.

While Yom Kippur is a religious holiday, its practices and themes can have a profound impact on mental health. By engaging in self-reflection, repentance, and seeking support, individuals can use this day as an opportunity for personal growth and healing.

Considerations for Yom Kippur During or Immediately Following a Hurricane 10/09/2024

In all matters of Jewish law, the preservation of human life is of primary concern. Period.

Yet sometimes, we lose sight of this concern when we have strong feelings about a particular practice or holy day.
