Join us next Thursday, June 20th at 6PM ET as Dr. Jonathan Ferrari, Head of Surgical Oncology at AMC, discusses the diagnosis and treatment of mast cell tumors in dogs and cats! 🐶🐈

As our pets age, it's important to be aware of the risk of skin cancer, particularly mast cell tumors. These tumors can vary widely in appearance, differing in color, shape, and size. While they primarily develop in the skin, mast cell tumors can also affect internal organs such as the bone marrow, spleen, liver, and gastrointestinal tract.

Although the thought of your beloved companion developing cancer may be frightening, many pets can have a good and prolonged quality of life if the tumor is caught early and treated properly.

Dr. Elkowitz says, "I am so grateful to have spent the past year rotating through the different specialties that AMC has to offer. As a rotating intern and newly practicing clinician, AMC has provided me with the support and mentorship I needed to develop my clinical skills, grow my knowledge base, and advance my veterinary career.

"I am thrilled to have matched at AMC for a diagnostic imaging residency, and even more excited to stay within the AMC family for more years to come!"

Meet Wednesday, one of our amazing 2024 Living Legend honorees! 💙 This sweet cat was found homeless on the streets suffering from a badly broken jaw by AdvoCat Rescue. Wednesday’s jaw had fused together so that she wasn't able to open or close her mouth and could only eat by lapping up food with her tongue. 😿

🦷 Her wonderful rescuers at AdvoCat Rescue applied for and received a grant from our AMC to the Rescue Fund to cover the cost of oral surgery, which would enable her to eat properly and live a normal, happy life. 😺 Dr. Django Martel, Specialist in Dentistry, and our Dentistry team oversaw her specialty care and incredible recovery!

Not all dogs are natural swimmers, and many are unaware of the dangers a pool can pose. Every summer, unsuspecting dogs fall into pools when no one is around to help. Follow these essential tips to keep your dog safe around the pool:

1. Provide a Dog Lifejacket: 🦺 Ensure your dog wears a lifejacket when near the pool. They are available in all sizes.

2. Install a Pool Fence: 🚧 A sturdy fence or durable net can prevent curious pups and children from accidentally falling into the pool.

3. Set Up a Pool Alarm: 🚨 Pool alarms detect motion in the water and can even attach to your dog’s collar to alert you if they get wet.

4. Create an Easy Exit: 🐾 Teach your dog to use pool stairs or install a ramp or floating doggie dock to help them exit the pool safely.

For more pool safety tips, check out our blog: https://www.amcny.org/blog/2024/05/29/keeping-cool-and-safe-by-the-pool/

Dr. La'Toya Latney, Specialist in Zoo & Reptile Medicine, our Diagnostic Imaging team, and the rest of AMC's Exotics team loved meeting with Hanunah and were happy to grant this special reptile a clean bill of health! 💛

Warmer weather means more time outdoors and a higher risk of encountering ticks. Your dog’s fur is a paradise for these parasites, which may carry dangerous diseases that can also infect humans.

Your veterinarian can recommend a preventative product to use year-round as a first line of defense against tick-borne diseases, but it’s still important to check your dog—and yourself—for ticks. If your dog has a tick, you may feel a bump that's as small as a pinhead or as large as a pea, depending on how long it has been feeding on your dog.

😱 How do you remove a fishhook swallowed by a dog? That’s the question AMC doctors faced when this poor pup was rushed to our ER.

🎣 The hook was embedded in the dog's esophagus, and in order to remove the hook without causing further damage, they used an endoscope to pull the fishing line taut, then an “overtube” to dislodge the hook and protect the surrounding tissue during removal.

🐶 This skillful procedure was a success! The hook was safely pulled out through the mouth, and the pup has fully recovered.

👏 Let's give a hand to the talented individuals on our Internal Medicine team that performed this delicate and life-saving procedure.

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a meaningful celebration for many of our team members, and we're proud to highlight the diverse cultures and identities this month acknowledges.

Precilla, Veterinary Assistant in our Surgery Service, shares why this month is so important to her!

"AAPI Heritage month to me is both a collective and individual reminder of our history and culture, and how it's influenced and contributed to all of our communities in New York City.

"Being born and raised in NYC to Southeast Asian parents, I didn't grow up with cats or dogs, but was allowed birds and fish—and even a rabbit! 🐦🐟🐰Those creatures sparked an interest in animals within my parents' comfort zones and limits at home. Today, that's a reminder of how far I've come in the field of veterinary medicine, as well as my parents now living with a house cat! 🐱

"To those beginning their veterinary careers, stay curious and focused on your goals! Coming across a diverse work team that celebrates inclusivity only makes you love what you do even more." 💙

Thank you, Precilla, for sharing your thoughts on the significance of this month!

📸 Precilla is pictured here with Abdul and Bhavya, Veterinary Assistants in our Emergency & Critical Care Service, and cute pup Kaia.

If you’re planning to take your dog to the beach, it’s important to be aware of sand impaction. This life-threatening emergency occurs when a dog ingests too much sand, usually inadvertently, and it forms an intestinal blockage. 🏖️🐕

Signs can develop anywhere from a few hours to a few days later and typically include vomiting, loss of appetite, and lethargy. If you see these signs following a trip to the beach, seek veterinary treatment right away. 🚨🐾

Treatment will depend on how much sand is impacted and how sick your dog is. Most dogs require hospitalization for intravenous fluids, medications, and X-rays to monitor the sand’s movement. 🏥🩺

Surgery should be avoided due to the infection risk that comes with removing millions of grains of dirty sand. Fortunately, most dogs do very well with medical management. 🐶❤️

Today, on , we honor rescue pup Cornelius!

🌽 This sweet dog, also affectionately known as "Corny," was found tied to a fence in the Bronx in rough shape. His name was coined because he was found to have swallowed a corn cob, which was causing a dangerous obstruction. His rescuers also noticed Corny had a limp that was possibly the result of an old injury.

🦴 After recovering from surgery to remove the corn cob, Corny was brought to AMC, where it was determined he would need a Total Hip Replacement in order to regain full mobility and improve his quality of life. His wonderful rescuers at Badass Animal Rescue received a grant for this treatment through KodiakCare as well as our Fund.

🧡 Since his operation with the skilled experts on our Surgical Service team, Cornelius has rebounded and is thoroughly enjoying a new lease on life! Wherever Corny goes, he makes friends and wins hearts. He is now thriving in a forever home with two loving humans and a feline sibling.

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Joel, a Veterinary Assistant in our Oncology Service, shares his thoughts about the significance of his heritage and offers advice for those starting their careers.

"The fact that the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center celebrates AAPI Heritage Month makes me feel like a valued part of the AMC family.

"As a first-generation immigrant who didn't know how to speak English, I faced many struggles when studying English and immersing myself in American culture. It took me four months to be able to speak one complete sentence. During that seemingly hopeless time, giving up never crossed my mind. That determination has followed me into the veterinary medicine field.

"Whenever I don’t understand something, I ask someone trustworthy to figure out the problem. In this way, I strive to assist doctors and Licensed Veterinary Technicians, ensuring a smoother workflow and providing the best possible care for our patients.

"I would tell others beginning their veterinary careers to be brave and curious. As long as you have an open mind and a willingness to learn daily, you will constantly discover new things. Don’t be afraid to ask questions; the people around you are always willing to help."
