in 1853, congregants laid the cornerstone for the AME Zion Church in the community of . The members of the church were among the first African-Americans to purchase property in Seneca Village in 1825.
As one of three churches in the community, the AME Zion Church not only played a key role in Seneca Village’s spiritual life but its educational life as well, housing a schoolroom for the education of Black children. Even after the displacement of Seneca Village through eminent domain, the church continued to grow and was eventually established in Harlem as Mother AME Zion Church. They may BEE small... but their impact is mighty! 🐝 🦋
Pollinators like bees and butterflies power the Park’s ecosystem by enabling plant fertilization and seed production. This essential evolutionary process ensures the next generation of plant life, which goes on to support biodiversity on all levels—from birds and squirrels to fungi and microorganisms. Although Central Park is human made, this urban ecosystem has become increasingly vital over time, serving as a stop for migratory birds and the endangered monarch butterfly!

Pond-ering Turtle Pond 🤔 🐢
Did you know that Turtle Pond is the newest water body in Central Park? It was created after the Croton Aqueduct’s receiving reservoir was decommissioned and filled in to create the Great Lawn. After this work was completed in 1937, there remained a small, jagged pond below Belvedere Castle called Belvedere Lake. In 1987, Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern renamed the pond to honor some of its inhabitants: five species of turtles call the pond home year-round. That’s certainly something to shell-ebrate!
The best view of Turtle Pond is from the overlook at Belvedere Castle, located mid-Park at 79th street.

Created by New York–based sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Grand Army Plaza’s William Tecumseh Sherman monument is both a tribute to a renowned military leader and a gateway to the rich history of New York City’s famed backyard. Standing 24 feet tall and covered in gold leaf, the statue depicts a striking winged figure named “Victory” proudly leading Sherman and his horse. Victory is modeled after Hettie Anderson, an African-American woman and the model for many of the era's most prominent painters and sculptors.

In search of an airy escape with immaculate views? 🤩 Take a trip to the Summerhouse at the Dene! This is a prime example of the rustic architecture favored by Central Park co-designer Calvert Vaux. The structure is designed in harmony with the nature and perched on a rock outcrop overlooking a lush landscape.
Originally, there were more than 100 rustic summerhouses, pergolas, boat landings, fences, seats, signs, beehives, and birdhouses scattered throughout the Park—most of them built by Hungarian carpenter Anton Gerstner.
Today, the has recreated many of these original rustic structures previously lost to time (like the Umbrella Structure and Log Shelter in the Ramble) and continues to maintain all rustic features in the Park.

Central Park is a vibrant intersection of human communities and nature. Millions of annual visitors immerse themselves in diverse, human-made landscapes in the heart of Manhattan. This interaction wouldn’t be possible without the work of landscape architects.
But what, exactly, is landscape architecture? We answer this question with the help of Sara Zewde (Studio Zewde), Maci Nelson (The Landscape Nerd, LAND studio), and our own Central Park Conservancy landscape architects. https://bit.ly/3ynxxOE

Contrary to popular belief, trash doesn’t take itself out! After July Fourth celebrations left Central Park in need of some TLC last week, our volunteers stepped up to the challenge! In just over three hours, they cleaned up nearly 600 pounds of trash.
Help our team keep Central Park beautiful by cleaning up after yourself. Remember, organic items don’t just disappear or simply break down. Scraps of discarded food will rot—attracting pests—and endanger Central Park’s ecological health, wildlife, and even visitors’ pets.
Thank you to the amazing volunteers who care so deeply about the Park and dedicate their time to restoring its beauty. We couldn’t do it without you! 💚
