❗ DOGS AGAINST PUPPY MILLS❗ It's Day - a day raising awareness about the cruel reality of pet store puppies and the puppy mills that they come from. These large-scale breeding facilities treat the dogs like products. The dogs live in cramped, overcrowded, and filthy conditions without proper veterinary care, food, water and socialization. The puppies are then trucked across the country to be sold in pet stores and online. Pet stores misrepresent where their puppies come from and continue to exploit them for profit. If you’re considering adding a new pet to your family, we encourage you to adopt from a local shelter or rescue, or learn how to identify a responsible breeder to ensure you’re not supporting cruel breeding practices like those found in puppy mills. After Losing a Limb, a Once Homeless Cat Gains a Loving Home 🧡

Meet Stewey, a resilient two-year-old cat who found his way to a loving home after a challenging start. Relinquished as a stray to County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control in January, Stewey had to have his left front leg amputated due to a severe injury. Fortunately, Dr. Twomey, our Veterinary Program Manager in Los Angeles, stepped in to provide post-operative care and a nurturing foster home. “He’s a full ham,” Dr. Twomey says, highlighting how Stewey blossomed into a lovable companion.

Stewey's amputation turned out to be a minor issue that didn’t affect his quality of life. He quickly adapted, learning to walk on three legs and following Dr. Twomey everywhere, even finding favorite spots like the couch and a cozy velvet blanket. Following his recovery, Stewey was neutered at the ASPCA Spay Neuter Clinic and then transferred to our wonderful partner, Santa Barbara Humanein March. Just one week later, he was adopted! Stewey’s adopter, Nicole, renamed him Skipper and she couldn't be happier. “He has so much personality, with his spunky, sassy moments as well as his cuddly ones." Nicole says.

Since 2017, our partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control has saved 12,000 kittens! During the quieter winter season, when there is less of an influx of kittens, we also pull adult cats out of crowded county shelters if foster homes are available. By adopting, fostering, or donating, you join what we call , helping create more space and resources for vulnerable animals. Visit https://bit.ly/4cNcww6 to read more about Stewey’s heartwarming story!

Rocket the Resilient Puppy Reunites with NYPD and The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center Heroes! 🐶
In May, the NYPD received a report of possible animal abuse in a Manhattan park and quickly went to the scene. They found a severely injured one-year-old puppy, Rocket, bleeding from his mouth. Officers rushed Rocket to the ASPCA Animal Hospital where they learned he had a fractured femur, possible brain injuries, and more. He was so critical that he was transferred to an ASPCA veterinary partner, Schwarzman Animal Medical Center to receive extensive care and see a neurology specialist. Once Rocket was stable enough to have surgery, he was brought back to our hospital to fix his femur and then spent several weeks receiving physical therapy from our medical team.
After a challenging recovery, Rocket recently reunited with the officers and animal welfare professionals who saved his life, many of whom hadn't seen him since the rescue. After receiving intensive medical care and rehabilitation, Rocket is now ready for his second chance at life and has an adopter waiting for him.

Thanks to our 10-year partnership with NYPD and our amazing vet partner, The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, Rocket is alive, happy and full of puppy energy!

Honoring a Hero: ASPCA’s New Transport Vehicle Hits the Road 🚐

Melissa Rock, a devoted driver for the ASPCA Animal Relocation Program, recently went on a heartfelt journey - transporting 21 adoptable dogs from Tennessee to Massachusetts. This trip was extra special as it was the first trip in a new state-of-the-art vehicle 🚐 named "Rock," dedicated to her late husband, Tom Rock. Tom was a beloved and committed ASPCA animal transport driver who unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack in 2023.

Tom, known for his positivity and unwavering support of our mission and shelter partners, transported over 7,000 animals across 274 trips during his six years with the organization. This lifesaving program relocates animals from overcrowded shelters in under-resourced areas to those where they have better chances of being adopted. Rock🚐 is now part of the fleet used by our Animal Relocation Program, the country’s largest animal transporter, with 25 vehicles and 26 contract drivers.

Rock’s🚐 first journey began in May, loading dogs from the Humane Educational Society and the Menifee County Animal Shelter in Kentucky. The two-day trip concluded at the .angell in Salem two days later. At the MSPCA, staff unveiled a kennel dedicated to Tom, featuring a name plaque in his memory. “The kennel stands as a lasting tribute to Tom's unwavering commitment, compassion and expertise, which he generously extended to every pet he transported safely to us,” says Josie, the Relocation Manager at .angell.

Thanks to the efforts of Tom and Melissa, thousands of animals have made their way to the MSPCA’s four shelters, with all 21 dogs from Rock’s first journey already adopted into loving homes! To read more about this heartwarming story, visit https://bit.ly/3LupMJV 🧡

We can't get e-neigh-ough of our equine friends on ! The ASPCA Right Horse Program aims to massively increase horse adoption across the United States because, unlike dogs and cats, many people don’t think to adopt a horse when looking for a new equine family member. This program unites, elevates and advances the work of equine adoption organizations, advocates and industry stakeholders so more at-risk horses can find their loving homes! Adoption support is just one way we help our nationwide and local partners. We also have grant opportunities, access to some veterinary services, mentorship, and more.
Alongside our national support, we have an Oklahoma-based program called the ASPCA Equine Transition and Adoption Center which develops solutions to the barriers that get in the way of at-risk horses finding homes. This program also supports local horse owners by providing options for caring for their horse and accessing free or low-cost veterinary services.
We are very thankful for all our partners in the equine world who help us share our mission! Because of their involvement and our specialized team, we are able to improve horse adoption learnings and share our findings with the equine welfare community. Learn more here 🧡 https://bit.ly/4cJ8epA

Our staff can't resist Puddin's affectionate nature and contagious joy. She's a pro at making friends with her wagging tail and wiggly dances of excitement. The Role of Vet Care in Keeping Your Pet Healthy This Summer 07/12/2024

Kittens, like Croissant 🥐✨ need your help! In April, Croissant and other siblings were found by a good samaritan on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, appearing to be orphaned at only a few days old. They were brought to the ASPCA Kitten Nursery in hopes they could survive without a mother and we welcomed them with open arms. Our veterinary team noticed that one little kitten, Croissant, had an umbilical cord wrapped tightly around her tiny hind leg. Her leg was so severely injured that it ended up falling off. Our team was able to provide her with specialized care as she overcame the challenges of becoming a tri-pod kitten. She has now completely recovered, adopted, and is playing every day!😊

She might not have had a second chance without our dedicated vet team and fosters. Please consider making a gift today to help more vulnerable animals like Croissant ❤️

Cats on Two Coasts Shine on National Kitten Day: Banjo and Fluffy 🐱

Happy ! Over the past decade, we’ve provided lifesaving support to more than 23,000 of the most vulnerable kittens in New York City and Los Angeles. With support from our dedicated foster caregivers, 11,000 kittens were saved through the ASPCA Kitten Nursery in NYC, with an additional 12,000 kittens rescued through our L.A. Kitten Foster Program!

Established in 2014 to support our wonderful partners at the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC), the ASPCA Kitten Nursery specializes in caring and treating neonatal kittens who are often too young to survive on their own. As we celebrate our 10-year milestone, which coincides with the peak of kitten season – a time when shelters nationwide are overwhelmed with vulnerable and newborn cats – we reflect on our impactful journey. Since 2017, our partnership with the L.A. County Department of Animal Care and Control has enabled us to save THOUSANDS of kittens in California. In both NY and L.A., we regularly take in kittens under 8 weeks old, who are too young and vulnerable for shelter care, and place them with foster caregivers.

In April, the first bottle baby of the NYC season, named Banjo, arrived from Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC)'s Brooklyn shelter. He quickly found a loving home over Memorial Day weekend after spending time with Andrea, an experienced ASPCA foster. In L.A., a tiny kitten named Fluffy was brought to the by a good Samaritan, and placed with Sarah, another ASPCA foster. Both Banjo and Fluffy thrived in their foster homes, becoming very social and outgoing. Andrea and Sarah cherish their fostering experiences. Though saying goodbye to their fosters is never easy, Andrea reflects that “it does get easier” over time.

Our programs in NYC and L.A. will continue working hard to help orphaned kittens find loving homes. By fostering or adopting just one animal, you help shelters save another. We call that . Visit https://bit.ly/4eW6g6E to read more and learn about how you can make an impact nationwide 🧡

ASPCA Provided 18 Fund-a-Farmer Grants This Year, Building a More Humane Farming System 07/09/2024

✨ ASPCA Awards 18 Fund-a-Farmer Grants to Help Build a More Humane Farming System🌱🐄
Since 2017, the ASPCA has partnered with Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), an organization that works to ensure all food-producing animals are raised in a more humane and healthy manner. FACT’s Fund-a-Farmer grants award farmers who want to obtain or who already hold a meaningful animal welfare certification, as well as to farmers who are improving their animals’ access to pasture.
FACT has awarded 695 grants, totaling over $1.3 MILLION to improve farm animal welfare, expand higher welfare farming practices and support work benefiting an estimated 1 million animals since 2012. This year, the ASPCA funded 18 of the grants, bringing our total supported farms through FACT to 128!
These grants are vital for creating a more humane farming system, providing necessary resources like adequate fencing, food, water, and other higher welfare practices to ensure farm animals lead better lives.
The ASPCA is dedicated to building more opportunities for farmers across the country so they can transition to higher-welfare systems, despite the financial challenges. FACT’s grant programs are a fantastic start, but the demand is high — they received over 600 applications this year alone! Let’s keep supporting humane farming together! The Dark Reality of a Puppy Mill Dog❗ She lives here, is bred here, and gives birth here. Even when she is too sick, too thin, or too old, she is forced to have more puppies. Her only “job” is to produce puppies so the commercial breeding facility can make a profit selling them over the internet and to pet stores. This is Lindy Lou’s reality. We know that Lindy Lou has lived in this facility for years, having puppies back-to-back in terrible conditions and despite seeing her suffering, USDA turned away. Three Baaa-chelor Goats Adopted as ‘Herbivore Stewards’ for Farm 🐐

In the rural setting of New England’s Appleton Farms, poison ivy is everywhere. Instead of relying on machinery or herbicides, the stewardship team wanted a more natural approach for land maintenance. Zoe, Appleton’s livestock and pasture manager, adopted three Billy goats — Allen, Elliot and Earl from MSPCA-Angell — who the ASPCA helped rescue from neglect in upstate New York earlier in the year.

Before finding their happy home, Elliott, Earl and Allen had a rough start to life. Alongside 14 other goats and 100 animals, they were living in poor conditions with limited access to food, water or medical care. Thankfully, their story took a positive turn when the ASPCA National Field Response team rescued them. Additionally, their former owner was held accountable, pleading guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty and failure to provide proper shelter, resulting in a three-year ban on owning or caring for animals.

In February, alongside a local veterinarian, ASPCA vets, responders, and staff worked diligently to prepare the trio for travel. After some crate training with positive reinforcement, the goats moved from a temporary shelter to MSPCA-Angell and now to their loving home – Appleton Farms.

Appleton Farms, home to more than 160 animals, has a creative solution to help with maintaining the landscape - rotational grazing systems for goats, sheep and cattle! Zoe praises the goats for their impressive "goat-scaping" skills in managing thick poison ivy. Zoe says she had no expectations when she adopted the trio and is impressed by their “goat-scaping” skills to manage thick poison ivy! With the help of MSPCA-Angell and New Hampshire SPCA we relocated 40 dogs (30 puppies and 10 adults) from Alabama to Massachusetts in hopes they will find a loving family to call their own. This flight and animal transport, sponsored by Subaru of America, Inc., is part of our Animal Relocation Program, which works with overcrowded shelters to relocate their animals to other shelters where the animals have more resources and a greater chance of being adopted. These collaborative transports are essential to the shelter system so more animals can be rescued. Our Relocation Program is the country’s largest national transporter of animals, having relocated over 260,000 animals so far!
