Thank you all for your calls and advocacy for the birth center accreditation bill! Unfortunately the bill was significantly amended from it’s original intent in a high pressure last-minute negotiation. The work continues in 2022 to fight for respectful birthing care 💪
Imagine being able to get respectful maternity care in your neighborhood - being able to walk to a birth center for prenatal visits, to give birth, to receive postpartum, newborn care, breastfeeding support in your community, covered by insurance. No hospital waiting rooms, no cabs while you’re in labor, free private postpartum rooms and far fewer interventions. We had this option in NY a decade ago until they all closed. We’re fighting to be able to re-open birth centers, but with midwives at the helm instead of physicians. If you believe in improving maternal care in NY, call at 518 474 8390 to tell her to TODAY. If she doesn’t sign it by the end of the year, the bill gets vetoed and midwives will not be able to open birth centers in NY and we will continue to have the 12th highest c-section rate, and the highest racial disparities in maternal mortality.
1. Elizabeth Seton at 222. West 14th street opened in 1996 and closed in 2003 due to high malpractice insurance.
2. St. Vincent’s in-hospital birthing center at 151 West 11th street closed in 2010 due to financial pressure. The site is now luxury condos.
3. Bellevue’s public in-hospital birthing center in Midtown East opened in 1998 and closed in 2009 due to financial pressure.
4. Mt. Sinai West’s in-hospital birth center near Columbus Circle closed in 2018 in favor of private postpartum rooms and a NICU.
5. The Jazz Birthing Center in Midtown West opened as an emergency facility during the Covid-19 pandemic and closed in 2021 due to staffing issues.
6. The in-hospital birthing center at New York Presbyterian in Lower Manhattan opened in 2016 and closed in 2019.
These images only represent the birth centers in Downtown Manhattan. Not pictured: The Maternity Care Association Birth Center at 48 East 92nd street that operated for 50 years from 1953 to 1996 until the townhouse was sold to Woody Allen, the Morris Heights Birthing Center in the Bronx that closed in 2010 and The Brooklyn Birthing Center that closed in 2020.
We’re almost out of time! Tell to before the year ends so that midwives can use national accreditation instead of prohibitive NYSDOH regulations that have not allowed a single birth center to open so far!
Imagine having a birth center you could walk to in your neighborhood for prenatal, birth, postpartum and newborn care!
Tell to that will use national accreditation for birth centers rather than New York’s prohibitive process under which no new birth centers have been able to open.

Our new studio at Patchin place 🌱 open for yoga, kids classes, massage and acupuncture!
We’re moving! After 6 years in our lovely Horatio street studio we’re moving to historic 9 Patchin Place on 10th street between Greenwich and 6th Ave. While I had hoped to re-open in our original, sweet Horatio Street studio, unfortunately, due to a host of unresolved maintenance issues that escalated without resolution, I decided to move.
Patchin Place is zoned for medical use, and I’m excited plant a seed toward being able to offer midwifery care when I graduate from midwifery school. Swipe for a pic of Patchin!
I know many of you have fond and warm memories of our storefront space. I know I’ll miss the kiddie pool parties, playing with the babies on the mat upstairs, taking before and after pics in front of the bird-butterfly wallpaper. I won’t miss packing in 20 strollers, the honking from the gas station and chasing toddlers from pulling up the foam floor!
For those of you who remember it fondly, I’d welcome any memories you’d like to share, via email, text, facebook or insta to say farewell and wish us well in the new location. You were part of a special moment and helped a storefront retail space that didn’t sell any stuff, but instead offered services and community.
Rest assured the new space is going to be just as special. We’ll have new wallpaper, the same warm studio feel, and the same great classes. Swipe for a glimpse of the new location!
With lots of love, Neelu

Prenatal / Postpartum Massage with Brandi! Brandi works with you to address your unique needs, applying the power of essential oils to balance your mind and body.
Brandi recommends ginger oil in winter as it warms the body starting from the middle and reaches out to warm cold hands and feet. This would be great for postnatal!
For prenatal, she knows all about pregnant people and baby friendly oils as explained in this video!
Book a massage and escape the chill from this cold winter weather!
