What's in the Case?
1. We are a pair of makers who both got our training at the Mittenwald School of Violin Making.
2. One of us serves as a co-organizer of the Brandenburg Violin Making Workshop - bringing violin makers from around the world together to share ideas, inspire each other, and advance the field of violin making.
3. In 2022, we were awarded a Gold Medal for tone for a quartet of instruments at the Violin Making Society of America competition.

WHAT’S IN THE CASE?
Use the following clues to take your best guess at which featured 2021 Exhibition maker has placed their instrument in the case below:
1. This maker is one of only a handful of violin makers to receive the prestigious “Hors Concours” status from Violin Society of America.
2. This maker trained with René Morel at Jacques Français Rare Violins, and worked as top restorer at Reuning & Son Violins.
3. Since 1994, this maker has devoted their skills entirely to making new violins, violas and cellos.
4. When not building exceptional fine stringed instruments, this maker can be found kayaking in Salem, MA with their teenage kids!

Today on MEET YOUR MAKER - GEORGE YU
George Yu became a luthier after working nearly a decade as an engineer. He is a graduate of the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City. Upon graduation, he apprenticed with the noted violin maker Ken Meyer in the greater Boston Area. He is based in Louisville, KY.
George was awarded Certificates of Merit for both Tone and Workmanship, for the violin he entered at the 2014 VSA violinmaking competition. Another of his violins was awarded a Certificate of Merit for Tone at the 2012 VSA competition. He has been a regular attendee of one or both of the VSA-Oberlin Violin Making and Violin Acoustics workshops since 2005.
George was guest columnist for the March 2018 issue of The Strad Magazine’s “Trade Secrets”. The Library of Congress published the blog entry “Researcher Stories: The Violins of George Yu” in August 2021.

Now it's time to MEET YOUR MAKER - that is, the violin and bow maker participants of the 2021 Exhibition!
We are thrilled to feature a violin by Ulrike Dederer. Ulrike is a highly recognized maker of stringed instruments following the traditional Cremonese style of violin making.
She was also the first female maker to ever be awarded 1st prize and gold medal at the XIII Concorso Triennale delgi strumenti ad arco in Cremona, where she returned to serve as a jury member in 2021.
