As part of the "Boldly Reimagining Special Education" initiative, Chancellor Banks held a press conference on January 31, 2024 to announce the expansion of Autism Programs, including Nest, based on his Special Education Advisory Council's recommendations to improve special education in the New York City Public Schools . In this video, Lucy Antione, the mother of a former Nest student shares her family's journey and their experience with the Nest program.
In partnership with the Central Autism Team at the NYCPS we co-authored a letter to the American Psychiatric Association to implore them to engage with the autism community and reconsider the language used in the DSM V to shift to language more affirming to neurodivergent identity!

We are excited to announce that we are changing our organization’s name from ASD Nest Support Project to Nest Support Project at NYU!
The elimination of ASD from our title reflects our continuing efforts toward anti-ableism and acknowledges the problematic language associated with the terminology of disorders (the D in ASD). Our model is grounded in the social model of disability and the use of neurodiversity-affirming practices; this name change better reflects these values.
We are proud to remain an innovative and evolving program at the forefront of inclusive education. We will continue to learn from the autistic and neurodivergent advocate communities, the true autism experts.
Additionally, we are imploring the American Psychiatric Association to engage with the autism community, reconsider the language used in the DSM, and shift to language that is more affirming to the neurodivergent community.
