Homelessness can be a dark, hopeless place, and in New York City it can feel like nothing will change. Lantern is that change.
We give people a home, and a reason to be excited for their future. But that’s not the end of the story. The people we serve still live with the trauma of homelessness, they often suffer with disability and chronic illness, and struggle to make ends meet. Our services give them the tools they need to recover – to get a job, to get the healthcare they need, to cook healthy food for themselves and t

Please join us in honoring Cynthia Hairston, recipient of SHNNY's 2022 Outstanding Tenants of the Year award!
Cynthia has been a resident at Lantern for 14 years, where she is an active pillar of the Lantern Community. As a Peer Vaccine Ambassador, Cynthia helped raise her building's COVID-19 vaccination rate from 40% to 90% in less than a year.
"What strikes me most in working with Cynthia are her genuineness, open-mindedness, and willingness to advocate for herself and others with deep integrity. When Cynthia witnesses unjust treatment of any kind, she is brave enough to name it, and to offer herself to be part of working towards a change."

Back to school and prepared❗
Thank you to everyone who donated to Lantern's Back to School Drive. We are proud to be sending off our 198 Lantern students back to school today with all the tools they need to succeed.
Thank you to our incredible staff who put together student backpacks and hosted beautiful Back to School events this past month to get our students excited for today.
It takes a village to raise a child. Let our effort lift our children up.
We could not be more excited to announce that Lantern alongside our partners Mega Development and the Afro-Latin Jazz Alliance have been chosen by The New York City Department of Housing Development and Preservation (HPD) to bring Timbale Terrace to East Harlem.
A stunning design by Urban Architectural Initiative will grace our neighborhood of twenty years with a new Afro-Latin Music and Arts (ALMA) Center and 330 affordable new homes, 99 of which are reserved for unhoused individuals and families.
" Lantern began providing homes and services in East Harlem in 2001 and over the years has expanded our capacity to meet the needs of families, young adults, veterans and formerly unhoused individuals. Timbale Terrace is allowing us to build an ever more expansive and unique vision of home anchored by the joyful expression of Afro-Latin heritage and culture. We are immensely thankful for our development partners, the City of New York and the community of East Harlem." - Diane Louard-Michel, Executive Director at Lantern Community Services.
