Latham is proud to be a long-time partner of Read Ahead, one of the community service opportunities in our New York office, helping New York City youth strengthen the literacy and social-emotional skills they need to thrive in school and beyond. We’re excited to spotlight our mentor-mentee pair Tara & Amelia for Marsh McLennan’s Global Volunteer Month! Scroll through to see pictures from Tara & Amelia’s time reading, learning, and having fun together, and Tara’s reflections on being a mentor.

Program Manager Dani Davis also shared her observations about the pair: “Amelia is always so excited to meet with her mentor! Tara is so supportive and encouraging, which boosts Amelia’s reading confidence. You can tell they genuinely enjoy each session and the stories they get to share!”

Many, many thanks to Marsh McLennan Careers (https://www.facebook.com/MarshMcLennanCareers) for their generous, ongoing support and steadfast belief in our work and commitment to NYC youth.

That's a wrap on another incredible Books & Beyond Gala! 🎉🥂📚️

Last week we were joined by over 300 guests for an amazing evening of inspiring stories, great food, and fun. It was a thrill to honor our longtime partner and celebrate Principal Amy Hom of P.S. 1 Alfred E. Smith Elementary School as our Authorship Award winner.

We could not be more grateful to our sponsors and supporters who have helped us raise $909,000 and counting to support our reading-based mentoring program in NYC public schools.

Get a behind the scenes look at what we’ve been up to the past few weeks 👀
Transcription: Hi! My name is Shay Li, and I'm the Senior Manager, Program and Impact, at Read Ahead. Our 2022-23 program ended at the end of May, and we're already in full swing, preparing for the upcoming year.
Although our program takes place during the school year, summer is still a very busy time for our Program team, working on a variety things such as: building out our literacy resources, laying out the foundation for mentor recruitment, meeting with school stakeholders to plan for the upcoming year, and other such projects.
Thank you so much to all of our mentors, families, and school partners! We're looking forward to kicking off the fall.

Photos from Read Ahead's post 07/13/2023

Here's some more pictures from Read Ahead's in-person sessions in May! It was exciting to see mentors and mentees together (some of them meeting for the first time), celebrate 5th graders graduating from the program, and see new friendships bloom! 📖🎓🧑🏼‍🤝‍🧑🏼

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers and school partners for your support, kindness, dedication, and belief in our work along the way. We're excited to kickoff another year in just a few months 🎉

Hear from Senior Program Coordinator, Eva David, about some of her favorite highlights from the past year! 👏🏼📚✨

Transcription: Some of the highlights from this school year was hearing the kids talk about their reading levels to their mentors. They were so excited to tell me and to tell their mentors.
Every year I ask the kids what they love about their mentors or what they love doing at Read Ahead, and one of the messages that really stood out was a mentee saying that he was grateful for his mentor and not only was she a mentor but she’s a good friend. They’ve been together for a long time so it was really wonderful to see them see each other in person and get to spend that time together cause this is his last year and he’s going to graduate.
It’s such a big difference that Read Ahead makes to these kids.

✨ Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year! ✨

May this year be full of connection, laughter, joy, and lots of great stories. Here’s to the best possible 2023! 💛

12/30/2022

For young children, fostering a relationship between the book and the reader is key! One of our Program Coordinators, Rui Jia Zheng, has some great insight on how to make that connection so that children become more invested in what they’re reading.

How are you closing out 2022?

We hope that everyone is taking time for rest, connecting with friends and loved ones, and fun.

It is not too late to make a positive impact this year by joining the community of supporters who help make Read Ahead possible. We want reading to be a JOY, and not a struggle, for NYC public school kids.

We have an urgent fundraising deadline to meet by 12/31. We are getting close, but we need your help! And the best part is that Read Ahead’s Board of Directors is MATCHING gifts up to $50,000. So every dollar donated has DOUBLE the impact.

Make your mark on 2022 and make sure that NYC students have the best 2023 possible. Visit https://donate.readahead.org/JoyfulReaders22 to make your gift today. Thank you!

We all have memories of reading growing up and Read Ahead’s program team works hard to build a positive association with reading for kids in our program. We asked one of our Program Coordinators, Cecile Johnson, what she loved about reading as a kid. 📖 💛

12/28/2022

Read Ahead mentees love to read about all kinds of topics! 🎨 🔭 🌎️

Estefany, a 5th grade student, shares that her favorite book is about Leonardo Da Vinci and she thinks reading is fun because “I can read about people, and the past, and how they changed the world.”

12/27/2022

At Read Ahead, we always strive to make reading a shared and engaging experience between mentor and mentee. Our Program Coordinator, Jamilla Simon, has some great tips on how to facilitate that:

Find what your student is interested in! It could be sports, superheroes, or animals, whichever one it is, choosing books that align with their interests makes all the difference.
Read together by alternating who reads each page and fostering a sense of togetherness while reading.

Reading is an opportunity to bring the experience of characters alive! One of our Program Coordinators, Britt Applewhite, shares that reading in silly voices is a sure way to bring the page to life.

12/23/2022

Reading can give kids access to a wealth of knowledge! 🧠 😄

Hear one of our Read Ahead mentees, 5th grader Erisenia, talk about how reading is joyful for her because she gets to read informational books and learn new things. She especially loves reading about dolphins! 🐬

📣 We have BIG news!

A generous group of Read Ahead board members are matching donations up to $50,000 through the end of the year! 🎉

This means that every dollar donated will go twice as far to help Read Ahead invest in the resources, tools, technology, and staffing we need to continue our reading-based mentoring program in public schools.

The best way to inspire kids to read is to make it joyful and fun! Here are some great tips from our Senior Program Coordinator, Eva David, on how to do just that. Eva recommends:

🪞 Letting kids pick books where they seem themselves represented
🎭 Using funny voices and acting things out
🎨 Drawing a picture of your favorite part after you’re done

12/17/2022

Did you know that reading is a fantastic stress-reducer? ☺️

A 2009 study from the University of Sussex found that reading for just 6 minutes reduced stress levels by 68%. Reading was even more effective than listening to music, going for a walk, or other calming activities. It doesn’t matter what type of book you’re reading, as long as it’s engaging!

12/16/2022

JOY is one of our core values at Read Ahead, and this holiday season we’re celebrating all of the ways that reading can bring joy - especially when we and read together during Read Ahead!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share some of our favorite facts, tips, and stories about the joy of reading. What do you love about reading? Let us know in the comments!

About Read Ahead 11/23/2022

Read Ahead was founded with the simple but powerful idea that when an adult and a child read together, a world of opportunity opens up. More than three decades later, over 19,000 NYC kids have participated in Read Ahead, developing literacy skills, confidence, and so much more.

This video from last spring featuring our friends at P.S. 92 in Queens captures so much of what makes Read Ahead special: the people. The beginning of this school year is flying by, but we couldn’t be more excited for another year of reading together and all of the great stories to come. 💛📚️
