1. Material poverty: affects those living in conditions opposed to human dignity.
2. Moral poverty: consists in slavery to vice and sin.
3. Spiritual poverty: is experienced when one turns away from God and rejects His love.

Classic socialism is the economic system that is the transition between capitalism and communism. Its aims are for the state to own and regulate the means of production, and for the people to share equally in the outputs. Its popularity resulted from the writings of Karl Marx.
The Catholic Church condemns socialism, especially classic socialism, as it violates private property rights, subsidiarity, and anthropology.

Historically, the Catholic Church has affirmed different forms of government, including monarchy, oligarchy, and democracy. The key issue for the Church is not the form of government but, rather, whether the government is working for the common good.
