The Horn of Africa is no stranger to war. Recent and old conflicts took place in these lands; from recent Sudan to the ancient (220,000 B.C) first-human civilizations, which would scalp each other.
Although prospects of peace have brought hope into the region, what once seemed like a new dawn, is now turning into the evening redness of a long, deep night.
Water is the new commodity that is pushing violence into the region. The lack of, has been exacerbated by the 5th year of continuous failed rains in the Horn of Africa. Today's refugee camps bring supplies from afar in a race against time. The refugee population that has endured the worst of armed conflict, now braces for a battle against increased temperatures, lack of food, and water.
While no long-term solutions have been found, in the meantime, UNHCR led coalitions are engaged in a loosing battle against an increasing number of Refugees in a land where scarcity is at par. While the populations within UNHCR camps grow, the access to food and water is rapidly decreasing.
While this photo project refrains from documenting armed conflict, it photographs a silent killer whose absence is the loudest shot fired.

Turkey | Juan Glassford Photographs from Turkey, February of 2023, in the days after a deadly earthquake hit the Eastern part of the country.
As Turkey grieves after being struck by one of the deadliest earthquakes in history, the meaning of daily life becomes estranged from what we once assumed as 'normal.' Simple acts become ones of contemplation and of gratitude. While many document the atrocities, I find myself documenting the unbearable seeming tranquility of the daily lives of a grieving community that deep inside is boiling.
While the immediate energy is being outsourced to Eastern Turkey, something is happening within the psyche of people living in the cities that weren't structurally affected by the quake.
