📣🎨 OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS 🎨📣
The Downtown Alliance is partnering with ArtBridge () to turn Lower Manhattan’s construction fencing into large-scale art. We are seeking a minimum of 5 artists to bring art installations to scaffoldings, sheds and other fencing around Lower Manhattan buildings. The submission window for design ideas closes in just five days – on September 22, 2024, at 11:59PM EST!
Several spots in Lower Manhattan have been transformed by ArtBridge and City Canvas initiatives in the past, and we’re excited to showcase more incredible work by New York-based artists. Those selected from this open call will follow in the footsteps of artists including Ebony Bolt, Michelle Weinberg, Blanka Amezkua and Davina Hsu, whose work appeared in front of the Brooklyn Bridge, bordering Battery Park, in the Seaport District and in front of Wagner Park, respectively.

Our next LM Live event takes a direct look into the complex journalistic effort behind some of today’s most popular true crime media.
Acclaimed journalists Robert Kolker (“Lost Girls”, “Hidden Valley Road”) and Jessica Pressler (“The Hustlers at Scores,” “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People”) will be in conversation on the evolving landscape of investigative journalism. The two will examine how podcasts and streaming services are reshaping long-form reporting and explore society’s fascination with dark topics like true crime, scams and mental health issues.
The event is free to attend with an RSVP. Learn more at the link in our bio!

Look up tonight as “Tribute in Light” once again returns the Twin Towers to their home in the New York City skyline.
At dusk on September 11, 2001, the sky above Lower Manhattan was clouded with smoke and ash. As the sun sets on New York this Wednesday, 23 years after the 9/11 attacks, two brilliant towers of light will fill the airspace instead. Beneath the skies both then and now: a city — and a nation — forever changed.
“Tribute in Light” was first presented in March of 2002 as a collective initiative by artists and designers to honor the countless lives lost and altered by the tragic events of 9/11. Every year since, on the anniversary of the attacks, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum sends up the twin beams just south of where the original buildings once stood. Comprising eighty-eight 7,000-watt light bulbs, they are the “most powerful shafts of light ever projected from Earth.” On a clear night, “Tribute in Light” can be seen within 60 miles of Lower Manhattan.
By nature, annual traditions, as “Tribute in Light” has come to be in New York City, inspire reflection on the year left behind. Since the lights last shined over Lower Manhattan, the neighborhood has continued rebuilding and reinventing itself, flourishing artistically, culturally and economically. This spirited momentum runs through Lower Manhattan’s residents and visitors too: after everything, they’ve got theater to see, restaurants to try, games to play, fun to have, life to live downtown.
“Tribute in Light” allows us to remember what we’ve lost, but reminds us what we stand to gain when we acknowledge that resilience, hope and the pursuit of joy are the only antidotes to terror. As you look up at the night sky, see Lower Manhattan for all that it is — highs and lows, rush and stillness, changes and stubborn resilience — in the poignant light of reflection, if only until dawn. https://twn.nyc/blog091124

As we approach the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we wanted to take the opportunity to remind New Yorkers that they can visit one of the city’s most moving museums at no cost.
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum offers free admission each Monday on a first come, first serve basis. The museum, which takes about two hours to experience, is the country’s “principal institution for examining the events of September 11, 2001,” and serves as an emotional tribute to the lives lost and changed on that fateful day.
According to their website, “Free Admission Monday tickets will be available on the website each Monday beginning at 7 a.m. ET.” The Memorial Pools, located outside the museum in the footprint of the Twin Towers, are free to visit year-round.

We are, as they say, so back. With our book drive, that is!
In June, the Downtown Alliance collected over 400 books and DVDs to be donated to residents at housing locations run by the Bowery Residents’ Committee. Now, as the season is changing and your sun-faded beach reads are collecting dust on the shelf, we’re bringing the media drive back to our information kiosk at Bowling Green Park!
For the month of September, you can bring your used paperback fiction books and DVDs to the Downtown Alliance kiosk at the south entrance of the park. We’ll be out there 9-5, seven days a week!

Our Story
The Alliance for Downtown New York was founded over 25 years when a small group of visionaries, partnering with the downtown business community and area residents, came together to reimagine what Lower Manhattan could be.
It took innovation and fortitude. It took tenacity and perseverance to make real progress. Together, we have transformed a weak retail landscape into a burgeoning shopping destination, attracted a robust residential population (which has more than quadrupled in the last two decades), kept buildings graffiti-free and the streets clean of trash, installed better lighting to overcome the perception of unsafe streets, turned a dilapidated Stone Street into a one-of-a-kind dining district, beautified open space and fostered a bustling nightlife in a place that once largely shut down at 5 P.M. All of this required an unprecedented, collaborative effort between the government and the private sector. The ultimate result is a great urban success story.
Despite extraordinary obstacles, including one of our nation’s gravest tragedies, we have seen the evolution of a forgotten, declining neighborhood into a flourishing, dynamic 24/7 community that has changed the fabric of New York City. The last two decades have ushered in momentous progress in Lower Manhattan. Working with a wide range of partners, the Downtown Alliance has played a key role in nurturing this renaissance and changing the notion of what was possible. In addition to providing supplemental core services, which include deploying over a hundred public safety and sanitation officers, running a free bus service, managing streetscape improvements and doing outreach to the homeless, the Alliance supplies research, markets the area and undertakes economic development initiatives.
