“Our industry is just scratching the surface of what environmentally conscious and human centered lighting design can be. Far too often, we are having these conversations separately, putting light that supports our circadian rhythms in one bucket, and light that is energy-efficient and material-or-carbon-conscious in another bucket. I often find myself wondering why these conversations are not linked, because healing the planet heals people, and vice versa.”

If you don’t know, no you know! We are SO excited to welcome Chelsea Kreielsheimer to The SEED. Chelsea is a powerhouse in the lighting community, bringing her passion for sustainability and experience across a wide range of project typologies + LEED AP ID+C and WELL AP certifications to our team.
Chelsea (and her pup Leo) are known and loved by all in the design community, having worked with Lindsey in past design lives and being actively involved in the IALD’s Designer LCA Task Force, WILD (Women in Lighting Design) + other great lighting organizations in our industry. There is so much more to swoon over our excitement having join The SEED, but for now, enjoy her InSitu intro, drop her a line to learn more and look forward to many great collaborations with her in the future ✨

“Art lighting” is not limited to exhibitions and temporary installations. It can be made with standard and simple light fixtures.
Here, the linear LED lights you work normally expect to see suspended over an open workspace are recessed and surface mounted vertically to a wall. Add a colortunable back light (usually uplight) and you have a moment reminiscent of a James Turell exhibition.
All it takes is turning something expected on it side and playing with it from that point of you.

There is beauty and symbolism in this image far beyond the iconic materiality and form of the Mies Van der Rohe Pavilion.
Beneath it, highlights and subtracts architectural elements with intentionally place beams of light, revealing texture and dissolving form amidst this perfectly composed pavilion.
”DENTRO FUORI” at Barcelona Design Week.
Bringing you color, modularity and oh so fun light fixtures, all while being good to our planet 🌎
Featuring Polish based designer who uses biodegradable filaments that at the end of their life cycle, can be composted and dissolve completely.
The modular design allows reconfiguration of the lights and in the event of damage, only the broken element is replaced vs. entire lamp. Bluba encourages customers to return broken lamp shades, which can be melted down and reused to produce new lamps.
We’re designing more and more diffuse lighting moments into our projects (emphasis on moments ✨ ). A 1970’s trend that is making a welcome comeback, when used intentionally and in moderation.
One area we love to play with stretched fabric ceilings is in the bathroom. In the ceiling above a warm wood or vibrantly colored vanity + above a shower/bath (yes these can be wet rated)!
With the right finishes and color temperature, this design element provides a soft, even and bright light that won’t blind you if you look up while singling in the shower.
Ps - these can also use color tunable light 💡
Saturated finishes + white light 🟦⚪️
OR
Neutral finishes + colored light ⬜️🔵
We love playing with BOTH + choosing wisely based on the feeling, function and financials we’re working towards.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps, we’re closing out this week with elegance and simplicity. No better project to embody this on 6th Avenue than 641 Avenue of Americas.
Built in 1987, the former Simpson Crawford Department Store is now a a LEED Gold building and home to the first LEED-Platinum certified project in New York City.
Historic elegance and modern sustainability led the design approach, with subtle integrated lighting and layers of decorative light that sparkle upon entry.

“Diwali known as the “festival of lights” symbolizes light over darkness and good over evil. People gather wearing festive Indian outfits and adorn their homes with diyas (oil lamps), candles and lights. Sweets and gifts are exchanged between family, friends and neighbors. Praying to Laxmi - the goddess of wealth, we welcome luck and positivity into our homes by lighting lamps and making a rangoli - a design made on the floor at the entrance or steps of our homes with colorful powder or flower petals.”
Beautiful celebration and tradition shared by SEED Lighting Design Intern .
A warm and festive Diwali and Hallows Eve to all 🕯️
Wishing SEED founder and principal, Golsana Heshmati, the happiest of birthdays today🎂 🎉
Doug Wheeler is a pivotal figure in the Light and Space movement, renowned for his innovative use of light and perception. Since the 1960s, he has created installations that challenge our understanding of how light interacts with space and our senses. His works often evoke a sense of disorientation and wonder, inviting viewers to engage deeply with their surroundings.

Doug Wheeler’s installation, DN ND WD 180 EN - NY 24, immerses visitors in a space where light seamlessly shifts between day and night, blurring the boundaries between them. Inspired by his experiences as a pilot witnessing both day and night simultaneously, the work offers a unique sensory experience that feels almost tangible. The illusion of steam in the room, while not a physical presence, is a fascinating example of how white light reflections can alter perception. The bright, diffuse lighting interacts with the surfaces in the space, creating an ethereal glow that evokes humidity, tricking the mind into sensing an atmosphere reminiscent of steam. Such effects underscore the powerful influence of light on our sensory experiences, shaping not just the visual environment but also our emotional and physical responses to a space.
