Mental and physical stimulation is vital to keep your dog relaxed, but time is not always our ally to allow us enough quality-time with our dogs. Still, engaging with Fido even five minutes a day in enrichment activities can help his well being and strengthen the mutual bond.

The dogs are naturally excellent hunters and scavengers, and here is an example of a stimulating agility game that Fido would enjoy. Look at Fido's excitement when he runs through a tunnel to get the treat!

PET SAFETY CONCERNS DURING SPRING

It's Spring and your pet is now excited with the extra stimulation of sniffing the new vegetation. With it can come trouble: poisoning from pesticides applied to grass as well as plants that may be poisonous. “Poisons can be eaten, inhaled or absorbed through the skin” writes American Safety & Health Institute.

Symptoms of poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, muscle tremors, panting and shock drooling. These symptoms can also be the result of poisons such as antifreeze, insecticides or food items, e.g. chocolates.

If you think your pet has been poisoned, call your veterinarian or the National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) at: 1-900-680-0000 with as much as information as possible for the first aid steps. (Your call has a fee to support ASPCA’s hotline services.)

Our 9 year old Afghan Hound is now part of the Dog Aging Project! This is a long-term study supported by the National Institute on Aging (a part of NIH) to help scientists understand the effect of biology, lifestyle and environment on the aging of dogs, and even humans. You can nominate dogs of all ages to be part of this study, so please pass this along to anyone who may be interested in helping our companions live longer and healthier lives.

Tuck is a 1 year old neutered male Saint Bernard puppy in need of foster home. He is a typical Saint- great with people. Children 10+ please due to his size. Tuck is fully housetrained, chipped, UTD & fully vetted.
He is still a puppy and won’t be full grown until the age of 2/3. Tuck is very rambunctious and may play too rough with other dogs due to immaturity and not yet knowing his size. A home where he is the only pet is the best option. Prior large/ giant breed experience a must.

Here is TUCK talking..."Yes, I am big but very friendly and very young. I will grow up probably to 130lbs, but don't worry you I won't be in your way. I am Tuck, a puppy St. Bernard and I am now stuck in a shelter looking for a good home. Please contact me via Facebook if you or someone you know can give me a home. "

We are all returning to our offices which can cause separation anxiety among dogs who are used to constant companionship. The signs of separation anxiety include the usual barking & scratching as well as lack of bladder control and destructive behavior. This excellent advice from The Humane Society will benefit you if you need help managing their anxiety:

WALKING ON ICE

After the recent big winter storm, I could feel the cracking ice and salt for a number of days under my boots. So what about your dog’s paw pads which are made of callus? Your dog’s pads, though sturdy, could still crack while walking on rough salt and expose the raw skin underneath.

To prevent pain and infections, we recommend periodical checking of your dog’s pads through the winter, and the application of paw balm products such as Musher’s Secret. Training your dog to offer its paw will become helpful when applying such products.

WHAT TO DO IF A SKUNK SPRAYS ON YOUR DOG

Did you know that the skunk spray is actually an oil which makes it difficult to remove? Our long-haired Afghan Hound was recently sprayed in the face, neck and flanks while frolicking in my backyard near the river since the wildlife does enjoy the good habitat and “free food” offered by our suburbs during all four seasons.

Here are some tips to help you avoid the skunk odor in your home:

1. If your dog was sprayed in your neighborhood, don’t panic. Leave your dog outdoors (if weather permits) until you are ready to take care of the business of removing the oil. Change to old clothes, collect your shampoo, hydrogen peroxide & other grooming materials and put on your latex gloves. Also make sure you cover your dog's bedding area with an old blanket.

If you get inside with your dog, keep the dog in one area only and do not let him or her lay on anything.

If sprayed while traveling or hiking, be prepared and cover the seats with an old blanket before you get your dog inside a vehicle.

2. Most sprays end up around the face, neck, and chest area. Use paper towels to soak up the oily spray from the affected area.

3. Here are a few options to further treat the sprayed areas:

A. Use hydrogen peroxide (make sure it is fresh) mixed with dish soap:

“Chemist Paul Krebaum discovered a solution that changes the odorous thiols into odorless acids, thereby chemically neutralizing the skunk odor. The formula is: **1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (fresh bottle)**, ¼ cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), and 1-2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap.” (https://wildlife.unl.edu/pdfs/removing-skunk-odor.pdf)

B. Treat the entire affected area as well as undercoat with a bio-enzymatic formula such as Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. Follow the label instructions for dealing with areas around the face. Let the product completely dry before bathing.

4. In a bath tub or grooming area, use pet shampoo to wash the sprayed region. Dry your dog and repeat the bathing at least once more. Sometimes the odor can still stick to your dog for a few days even after the first bath.

Puppy mills may not protect pets.

https://www.facebook.com/286831684702307/posts/4675087049210060/?app=fbl

Puppy mill dogs are forced to live through the rain, the extreme heat and the bitterly cold winters.

That’s why you will find our volunteers out educating about puppy mills in all sorts of weather! The dogs don’t have a choice to go inside, so we choose to be a constant reminder to the puppy-selling stores that animals are suffering because of their greed.

Dog training is not just a mechanical skills, but it certainly is an important one. For example, one of my new clients owns a puppy for the first time. THe puppy jumps on his hind legs as soon as directed to sit. Let's give you all a quizz: What would you do to train this puppy to sit instead of jumping?
Answers are welcome.
I will give mine afterwards
