We were honored to have worked with Robert Irwin to reimagine Carpenter Park in Dallas and the re-positioning of his sculpture, Portal Park Slice - both on the site and within his body of work. It was the first time Bob had changed one of his early works in response to changed conditions, and its arcing filigree ends animate the plaza under the freeway, extending from the hill it seemingly slices.

The park was completed in 2022, and we are pleased he was able to participate before his passing. He changed the art world with his work and conceptual approach to conditional art and he will be missed.

Reflecting on an amazing weekend in LA at the third Community Workshop for the Paseo del Rio at Taylor Yard Project! We are excited to have had the incredible opportunity to unveil the final design to the vibrant community.

As the first phase transforming this derelict site the park includes: A grand gateway and entry pavilion which will welcome all, featuring events and parking plaza that promises to become a hub of activity and connection; A meandering walkway skirting the river's edge seamlessly links two expansive sites along the iconic LA River, fostering unity and discovery; Promoting sustainability, a state-of-the-art water quality feature redirects stormwater from its conventional path, allowing it to flow through a new channel, nurturing habitats before gracefully merging with the river's flow; An ode to history and community spirit, the restoration of the cherished historic railyard turntable not only honors the past but paves the way for gatherings, cozy events, and a tranquil open space that everyone can relish.

We are humbled by the enthusiasm and engagement of the community throughout this journey. Together, we're creating a legacy that intertwines nature, culture, and innovation. Stay tuned as we watch this dream unfold, one thoughtful design element at a time.

This weekend, City officials gathered for the groundbreaking for our Sixth Street Viaduct Park Project!

The Viaduct (opened last year) and park create a multi-modal connector that includes pedestrian, bike and vehicular access, transforming the LA River, at this point at least, from a historic divide to an attractive series of open spaces that bring a diverse range of communities together.

The design of the park organizes the proposed program elements around a series of curvilinear pathways that reflect the new Viaduct’s graceful structural archways. As a unique landscape set in two distinct neighborhoods the urban park is designed to be flexible and respond to the desire that it serve as a respite from the surrounding infrastructure-dominated environment; be a place for community gatherings, festivals, and events; and provide access to the L.A. River.

“The park and the bridge will be one big jungle gym,” said Deborah Weintraub, Chief Deputy City Engineer with the Bureau of Engineer

What a way to celebrate summer solstice! ☀️

Yesterday the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City celebrated the longest day of the year with an annual special cultural observance. The setting of the sun was the highlight and at exactly 8pm, the solstice sun rests at the peak of the 80-foot high mound – interpreting the continuous ascension from the land to the sky. The mound is a cosmological clock tracking the sun’s movements, and a passageway cut through the dramatic landform frames the setting sun during winter solstice.

The successful event featured First American dancing, cultural demonstrations and reflections, and showcased traditional summer dwellings and structures, including a Southeastern Arbor, Chickasaw Toompalli Chokka, Wichita Grass House, Plains Tipi and Potawatomi Wigwam.

We are thrilled to announce that we have teamed up with and find ourselves in the company of incredible talent on the shortlist for the reimagination of the Dallas Art Museum.

“The Museum is focused on better serving the diverse city of Dallas and being a dynamic connector where people of all cultures feel welcomed and embraced. Stronger civic connections will reaffirm the DMA as the anchor of the Dallas Arts District and connect it to surrounding neighborhoods. Overall, the DMA's project aims to improve the museum’s engagement with its communities, forge deeper civic ties, transform the visitor experience with new facilities, and expand educational and gallery space. The competition's first stage began in February 2023, with 154 team submissions worldwide. The DMA's Architect Selection Committee decided to shortlist six teams.”

Silver Lake Reservoir Complex Master Plan receives the 2023 ASLA-NORCAL Honor Award!

As habitat disappears and species populations diminish at alarming rates, re-introducing wilderness into our cities offers a means to not only offset habitat losses, but also demonstrate how we can coexist with wildlife in our urban environments.

The Master Plan proposes to introduce freshwater wetlands and aquatic habitat for the first time in over 100 years, an ecology that was slowly erased to meet the needs of a growing Los Angeles and restores remnant woodland habitat from the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. Woven within these bold environmental design moves are an extensive network of trails, a promenade, gardens, and flexible lawns for the community to connect with nature and one another.

The Master Plan envisions a resilient legacy park that will endure for generations.

The American Institute of Architects has named Parks for Downtown Dallas the recipient of its 2023 Collaborative Achievement Award for its role in creating four parks in the heart of Dallas.
As the population increased, the need for parks that connect neighborhoods, bolster the community’s health, and improve the city’s environment became clear. Carpenter Park is one of the four planned outdoor spaces.

The Hood Museum of Art in Hanover, NH recently won an AIA Merit Award. We were honored to work alongside a great team led by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects to build this project.

The Hood Museum of Art, designed originally Charles W. Moore and Chad Floyd in 1985 underwent extensive renovations and expansions, including the addition of five new galleries, a multipurpose lobby, and the revamped Bernstein Center for Object-Based Inquiry and a new entry plaza. The renovation modernized the building while preserving its original character. The surrounding plaza and entry space seamlessly integrates into its surroundings, navigating subtle grade changes with the use of stairs and ramps. The modern paving palette creates clear and open site lines, complementing the character of the new Museum.

As part of our recently completed project in Oklahoma City, Scissortail Park includes a 4-acre man-made lake with wetlands designed to collect and reuse stormwater for irrigating across the entire 70-acre park, resulting in not only potable water conservation but also cost savings to the City.

"We're already seeing cost savings from using this water — reusing the water — and cost savings from using native plant materials too," said Lance Swearengin, director of horticulture and grounds for the Scissortail Park Foundation. "We have times of drought that can be pretty excessive like we are in right now, so demonstrating those water conservation aspects to the public can help reduce water in residential gardens." https://lnkd.in/gkfbBweK

A series of informational signage helps educate visitors and residents on the ways in which the park collects, retains, and reuses water throughout the park.

We are so happy when we get to see our research efforts result in measurable results that address the impacts of climate change.

New York State has selected our team, lead by PAU Architects, to design the new Niagara Falls Heritage Gateways Project.

The project will include gateway structures and new park aimed at enhancing connections between downtown and the Niagara Falls State Park.

"It is by building on a foundation of shared history — instead of trying to reinvent cities from scratch — that we truly strengthen and benefit communities. Public infrastructure is at the center of successful urbanism — we applaud New York State for championing public spaces and architecture that connect us to our narratives, to our environment, and to one another." - Vishaan Chakrabarti, PAU
