Poseidon Greek Bakery (629 9th Ave), at this location since 1949, survived the disappearance of Greektown (1940-1967). It is the last Greek bakery in NYC to make their own filo dough by hand.

Port Authority (built 1951) demolished the family bakery's prior 1925-49 location at 315 W 41st St. The business was previously in Ohio from 1910 and operating in Greece before that. 4 generations of two families related by marriage have run it.

Poseidon Greek Bakery still uses the century-old Spanakopita recipe of its founder Demetrios Anagnostou who was born Oct 15, 1878 near Corfu, near what is now the Greek-Albanian border.

Many Greeks / Macedonians immigrated to the City before, during and after the Balkan Wars (1912-13) and they would invent the Coney Island Hot Dog that would become popular across America.

(James) Demetrios Anagnostou landed Feb 13, 1910, along with wife Barbara (born Oct 20, 1884) and their kids Evanthia (born Apr 20, 1907), Mikala (born Apr 10, 1908) and Yanoula (born Mar 15, 1909). They later had Cleopatra (born Mar 19,1924).

Mikala aka Mitchell aka Michael Anagnostou became the next owner.

In 1940, Michael Anagnostou, 32, listed his future wife Manina Fable (aka Menina aka Domenica), 28, as his friend. She then lived at 317 W 41st St, next door to the Anagnostou bakery. She was then married to Anthony Fable of Italy. One of their children was Anthony Fable II (born Jan 23, 1935), then age 5.

Manina would would later re-marry to MIchael Anagnostou. In 1956, when Anthony Fable II was 21, he met Lili, 16, at the family bakery. Michael was still running the bakery. Anthony II and Lili then got married and had sons Anthony III, Marc and Paul.

Anthony Fable II and Lili Fable would then became the 3rd generation bakers running the family bakery. All 3 kids worked at the bakery.

Lili Fable has appeared on Martha Stewart showcasing her Greek baking talents. She and Anthony retired c2011 but Lili, now 80, still helped out Paul, who took over. Paul was born c1970 and grew up above the bakery.
