Join us this Thursday, 9/19, for a live representation of Kim Cass' recent album, Levs, showcasing the core trio. They will be playing compositions from the record, as well as improvising new pieces!
Matt Mitchell - piano
Tyshawn Sorey - drums
Kim Cass - bass
The concept of this music is focused on mysterious pulses that are obscured, creating new sonic environments. The bass is the compositional center, often heard in a harmonized unison setting with the piano. The music was written by hand with pen and paper.
Kim Cass, originally from Bar Harbor, Maine, developed his musical language precociously as a virtuoso jazz bassist. An utterly unique improvisational thinker, his early years were spent producing solo recordings of upright bass in electronic composed settings. After receiving his Bachelor's in music from the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, Kim relocated to San Francisco and then New York City. He has recorded and performed with pianist/ composer Matt Mitchell, saxophonists John Zorn and Noah Preminger, and multi-intrumentalist/ composer Tyshawn Sorey among others. Kim is on the teaching faculty for lessons at the New School and has many visiting students. He currently is focusing on composing music for the bass and other instruments in new and inventive ways, showcasing a unique style of detailed handwritten notation.

Micah Thomas - piano, composition
Adam O'Farrill - trumpet
Caleb Smith - trombone
Immanuel Wilkins - alto saxophone
Maria Grand - tenor saxophone
Kanoa Mendenhall - bass
Kweku Sumbry - drums
Mountains is a collection of work for large ensemble that plays with spectrums of density and scarcity, of establishing and breaking repetition/pattern, and of structure and freedom, with the goal of allowing the audience and the performers to enter a cathartic state. These compositions were commissioned and recorded last year by The Jazz Gallery for their 2022-2023 Commission Residency Series. Now the band returns to celebrate the September 13 release of "Mountains", Micah Thomas' latest album consisting of recordings from that residency.

OVER THE MOONs is a brand-new set of music from Taiwanese vibraphonist Yuhan Su. Su wrote the music in February 2024 during her residency at Ucross Foundation In Wyoming. The idea came from the ever-present reality of Double-Consciousness that exists like two Moons inside of her brain after living in the US for over 15 years. In the same way that each moon draws its own tides and shines in its own time, Su constantly perceives things in different languages and through the framework of multiple cultures. This music taps into shifting and extended harmonies through multiple layers of sounds, melodies, and grooves. The project features a fantastic Octet with Alex LoRe on alto saxophone, Anna Webber on tenor saxophone, Matt Mitchell on piano, YingDa Chen on guitar, Marty Kenney on bass, James Paul Nadien on drums, Shinya Lin on live electronic processing with MAX/MSP and Yuhan Su on vibraphone with effect pedals. After this world-premiere evening, the band will do a studio recording studio to document this music.

At the very inception of FONT Music, Dave Douglas teamed up with FONT co-founder Roy Campbell, Jr. and fellow trumpeter Baikida Carroll to create a group called Alloy. It was at one of these gigs, at Tonic on the lower east side, that Roy and Dave first discussed programming a month of new trumpet music. For this special event, Alloy returns with a brilliant addition of two great young trumpeters, Alexandra Ridout and David Adewumi. This event recreates the original instrumentation of Alloy, with all new music and improvisations by its members.

"There’s nothing like the feeling you get when you’re hearing your compositions and arrangements played by a wall of sound."
- Roy Hargrove
Originally started in the rehearsal space that would later become The Jazz Gallery, the Roy Hargrove Big Band had its inaugural performance at the Greenwich Village Jazz Festival in 1995. Since then, the band has toured domestically and internationally and has played everywhere from the Blue Note Tokyo to the Hollywood Bowl. Roy conducted the big band while also playing trumpet and flugelhorn and lending his vocal, most famously, on the fan favorite "September in the Rain". The arrangements comprised of Roy's original compositions, standards, and new music by band members and other contemporaries whom he respected. They released one album, Emergence, under Roy’s leadership in 2009.

“There’s little disagreement that Adam O’Farrill is among the leading trumpeters in jazz- and perhaps the music’s next major improviser.”- The New York Times
Composer and trumpet player Adam O'Farrill's music is as radiant and free-flowing in its melody, as it is geometric and off-kilter in its rhythm. As a bandleader, O’Farrill has released the critically-acclaimed albums Stranger Days, El Maquech, and Visions of Your Other, collections of music inspired by everyone from Miles Davis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Thom Yorke to Alice Munro, Rene Magritte, and Paul Thomas Anderson. Further shaping O'Farrill's work as a composer and improviser have been his collaborations with a wide range of artists including Mary Halvorson, Hiromi, Anna Webber, Mulatu Astatke, Tyshawn Sorey, Son Lux, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Samora Pinderhughes, Kaoru Watanabe, Photay, and Stimmerman.

Our Story
Founded in 1995 by Dale Fitzgerald and Roy Hargrove, The Jazz Gallery's stellar programming has enabled a reputation as "The most imaginatively booked jazz club in New York." (NY Times) and "The best place to hear live music in New York." (TimeOut NY). As a nonprofit, it has the ability to allow musicians to take creative risks that other jazz venues would be likely to avoid - therefore, The Gallery is a hub of creativity, a home to jazz musicians/composers, many of them from all over the world but now permanently settled in the United States.
The Jazz Gallery serves an ethnically diverse, international audience that represents a cross section of New York City residents and travelers to New York. The Gallery has many loyal audience members from the region, as well as those who come from all over the world and allocate time during their travel to specifically come to hear performances. Audiences represent all ages -children are comfortable attending since no alcohol is served, and many young college students from NYU and the New School frequent the venue regularly alongside adults of every age. One of the best bargains in NYC, the average ticket price is $10-$20 (occasionally, some special events are $35 or $40). The Gallery is open 3 to 5 nights per week, 50 weeks per year and produces an average of 175 events per year. In 2009 its audience was in excess of 11,000.
The Jazz Gallery produces most of its programming in it’s own venue, a loft space with walls that also serve as a gallery for artwork relating to jazz. It seats 70 people. The rented space is on the fifth floor of 1160 Broadway, accessible by elevator. The Jazz Gallery recalls Soho loft spaces of the 1960's and 70s, and conveys an intimacy and warmth that many newcomers comment on.
Thematic series include the Thursday Night Debut Series, a Commissioning Series supported by the Jerome Foundation, large ensemble presentations, and Composer Workshops with Steve Coleman. Funding in 2009 and 2010 included grants from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Jerome Foundation, The Greenwall Foundation, the New York Community Trust, Meet the Composer, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and The National Endowment for the Arts, among others. In June 2010, The Jazz Gallery presented six concerts at its venue as part of the New York City CareFusion Jazz Festival. Two of the six concerts were webcast by NPR and WBGO. In addition, as part of the CareFusion Jazz Festival, The Jazz Gallery All -Stars appeared at Symphony Space's Peter Norton Theater, launching an initiative to create opportunities for jazz musicians at other larger performance venues.
Over the past fifteen years The Jazz Gallery presented nine of the last eleven winners of the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition PRIOR to their winning this competition. This year, in 2010, Jason Moran, a formidable pianist who has frequented the stage of The Gallery for more than 10 years, won a MacArthur Award; in 2008, Miguel Zenon, another musician whose emergence began at The Jazz Gallery, was a MacArthur Recipient. (Miguel is in residence at The Gallery this year.) Every jazz musician appearing at The Jazz Gallery, emerging and established, knows that this is a venue where they can experiment, try out new material, and grow and develop as artists. The Jazz Gallery's 2009/2010 season included, among many others, emerging artists such as Andy Milne, Pedro Giraudo, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dafnis Prieto, Darcy James Argue, John Escreet, Yosvany Terry, Ben Williams and Linda Oh, as well as established artists such as Ravi Coltrane, Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, Henry Threadgill, Oliver Lake and Fred Hersch.
